MSNBC preempted Morning Joe on Monday, July 15, 2024, replacing it with rolling breaking-news coverage after the July 13 attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The network said the decision reflected the gravity and complexity of the developing story, and the program was announced to return Tuesday. It was a one-day preemption, not a cancellation.
What aired instead of Morning Joe?
The weekday political news and talk show did not appear in its regular Monday morning slot. MSNBC carried a unified breaking-news feed instead, continuing coverage of the Butler rally shooting, its aftermath and the opening of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
The change affected the Monday, July 15 edition only. A notice reported by Forbes said: “regularly scheduled Morning Joe will return on Tuesday.”
MSNBC’s stated reason
An NBC News spokesperson told TVNewser that the network had chosen continuous coverage across its news channels:

What about reports of a guest-related concern?
The Washington Post reported that MSNBC denied a CNN report suggesting the show was pulled because a guest might make an inappropriate live comment that could be used to attack Morning Joe or the network. The guest-control account concerned what one of the show’s “two dozen-plus guests” might say, according to the Post’s summary of CNN’s reporting.
That theory remains a disputed report, not an established motive. MSNBC’s denial and the network’s on-the-record breaking-news explanation should be kept separate from CNN’s account of an alleged internal concern.

How the hosts described the decision
When the show returned Tuesday, Joe Scarborough and his colleagues said they had been told Sunday evening that NBC channels would use one news feed and that the network would stay in breaking-news mode. Axios reported that the hosts appeared surprised and frustrated that the program was absent.
This creates an important distinction: management described a unified editorial decision, while the hosts discussed how and when that decision was communicated to them. Their reaction does not, by itself, establish a different reason for the preemption.

What the later schedule confirms
A March 18, 2026 press release from MS NOW/Versant said Morning Joe would continue Monday through Friday while shifting to a three-hour, 6–9 a.m. Eastern schedule beginning in June. The release listed Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist as anchors, with Jonathan Lemire co-anchoring the 8 a.m. hour.

The continued weekday listing reinforces that the 2024 absence was a single-day news preemption rather than the end of the show.
The short answer
MSNBC skipped Morning Joe on Monday because it stayed in rolling coverage of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump and the fast-moving political aftermath. The network publicly cited the story’s gravity and complexity. A separate guest-related explanation was reported and denied, and the program returned Tuesday.
