Diane Keaton: 10 Best Movies, From Annie Hall to The Godfather

There is no definitive ranking of Diane Keaton’s best films. This editorial selection spans her award-winning comic lead, dramatic roles, romantic comedies and ensemble work—so you can choose a starting point by the kind of performance you want to see.

10 Diane Keaton movies worth watching

1. Annie Hall (1977)

Keaton plays Annie Hall, a singer and aspiring performer whose relationship with comedian Alvy Singer unfolds through a non-linear mix of memories, conversations and comic asides. It is the clearest first choice for her distinctive screen comedy: relaxed, idiosyncratic and sharply timed. Keaton won the Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role at the 1978 ceremony for the film, which was released in 1977. The Academy’s 1978 record confirms the award. Start here for the landmark performance; the rest of this list shows how much more her career encompassed.

2. The Godfather (1972)

As Kay Adams, Michael Corleone’s girlfriend and later wife, Keaton offers a perspective on the Corleone family that sits outside its criminal hierarchy. Her composed performance gives the film’s intimate relationships a quieter counterpoint to its violence and power struggles. It is an essential pick for seeing her in a major dramatic role. The American Film Institute discusses Keaton’s work across The Godfather trilogy in its career overview.

3. The Godfather Part II (1974)

Keaton returns as Kay in the sequel, where the marriage to Michael is tested by the choices he makes. Her restrained performance helps convey the personal cost of his ambition without pulling focus from the film’s broader crime saga. Watch it after the original: Kay’s role gains much of its force from what has changed between the characters.

4. Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)

Keaton plays Carol Lipton, a curious New Yorker who suspects a neighbor may have committed a crime. The film lets her turn alertness and comic exasperation into the engine of a light mystery. It is a strong choice for viewers who want her wit in a playful, plot-driven setting rather than a romantic comedy centered on a love story.

5. The First Wives Club (1996)

Keaton is one of three longtime friends who reconnect after their marriages end and decide to take action against the men who wronged them. The ensemble format gives her room to play off her co-stars while grounding the comedy in friendship and reinvention. Choose it for a buoyant group comedy; both AFI’s career overview and the Associated Press selection of Keaton films highlight it.

6. Marvin’s Room (1996)

In this family drama, Keaton plays Bessie, who has spent years caring for her ailing father and aunt. A reunion with her estranged sister and her sister’s children brings old tensions and difficult choices into the open. This is a good pick for a more serious, inward performance. The Associated Press includes it among Keaton’s notable films in its selection of six films.

7. Shoot the Moon (1982)

Keaton plays Faith Dunlap, a mother whose marriage is breaking down. The film’s focus on the strain of family life gives her a chance to work in a more naturalistic dramatic register, far from the breezy comic persona audiences may know best. Pick it when you want a relationship drama rather than a comedy; the Associated Press also identifies it as one of her notable films in its Keaton viewing guide.

8. Reds (1981)

Keaton plays journalist Louise Bryant in Warren Beatty’s historical drama about political activism and revolution. The role combines a personal story with a large historical canvas, making this a useful choice for viewers interested in period drama and Keaton’s work beyond comedy. It broadens the list’s range without relying on her best-known comic roles.

9. Something’s Gotta Give (2003)

Keaton plays Erica Barry, a successful playwright whose romantic life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Harry, a much older man dating her daughter. The film gives her a mature romantic-comedy lead, balancing verbal comedy with vulnerability. It is the place to start if you want a romance built around Keaton’s presence at the center. AFI and the Associated Press both include it among her notable films (AFI; AP).

10. The Family Stone (2005)

Keaton plays the matriarch of a family gathering for the holidays, where clashing expectations and relationships shape the visit. Its ensemble structure and shifts between comedy and emotional drama make it a fitting choice for viewers who like family stories with a large cast. It also extends the list into Keaton’s later-career comedy and drama mix.

Which Diane Keaton movie should you watch first?

  • For her most celebrated lead performance: Annie Hall.
  • For classic crime drama: begin with The Godfather, then continue to The Godfather Part II.
  • For an ensemble laugh: try The First Wives Club.
  • For a romantic comedy: choose Something’s Gotta Give.
  • For a serious family drama: try Marvin’s Room or Shoot the Moon.
  • For a lighter mystery: choose Manhattan Murder Mystery.

These are editorial picks, not an official or universal top ten. AFI’s career overview, the Associated Press’s six-film viewing guide and film-credit listings from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic help show the breadth of her work; they do not establish one definitive ranking.
