Yes, the complaints are legitimate—but they describe two different problems. In the U.S., HBO Max’s Basic with Ads plan is designed to show approximately six minutes of advertising per hour, including commercials before and during on-demand movies and shows. Some viewers also report repeated ads, awkward interruptions, frozen ad breaks, subtitle problems, and broken playback controls. The evidence supports user frustration, but not the claim that HBO Max has universally exceeded its published ad policy.
Note: Current U.S. help pages and the App Store listing use the name HBO Max, while many viewers still call the service Max. This article uses both names for clarity.
What HBO Max officially promises
According to the U.S. advertising policy, Basic with Ads includes about six minutes of ads per hour. Ads may play before and during both movies and shows. They cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while they are playing.
That figure is approximate, not a promise of a fixed number of commercials or identical break placements in every title, device, market, or session. Six minutes could consist of several short commercials or fewer longer ones.

When playback is paused, ad breaks may be marked on the progress bar. During a break, the player displays the number of ads and a timer. Promotional trailers shown before content may have a Skip button, but ordinary commercial breaks do not.
Why viewers describe the ads as excessive
User complaints focus on more than the total number of minutes. Reports in the U.S. App Store listing describe:
- Several commercials in a single break.
- The same brand appearing repeatedly.
- Mid-roll interruptions at awkward points in a movie or episode.
- A subscription feeling expensive despite containing commercials.
- An ad timer appearing while the program frame remains frozen.
- Subtitles continuing while the visible video is stuck.
- Playback returning out of sync.
- Unreliable rewind, fast-forward, or next-episode controls.
- The app advancing prematurely to another episode.
These are user-submitted reports, not an independently measured failure rate. They show that the experience can be frustrating, but they do not prove that every subscriber sees the same ad load or that HBO Max has changed its policy for everyone.

Does HBO Max intentionally repeat ads?
Sometimes, yes. HBO Max’s own help documentation says viewers may see a particular brand more often while watching a series, a long movie, or similar genres. It also says sponsored titles may show a similar promotion at the beginning of each episode.
That explains some reports that “the same ad keeps playing,” but it does not establish that every case of repetition is normal. Excessive repetition combined with freezing, failed loading, or corrupted playback may indicate a technical problem.

Do ad-free plans remove every promotion?
No. Standard and Premium are described as ad-free for on-demand movies and shows, but HBO Max says promotional messaging may still appear before content on all subscription plans. Live events may also contain advertising regardless of plan.
That means a trailer for another HBO Max program is not the same as a third-party commercial inserted into an ad-supported movie. An ad-free plan should remove ordinary on-demand commercials, but it is not a guarantee that viewers will never see any promotional message.

How to check which plan you have
On a phone, tablet, or computer, open your profile and select Subscription. On a TV device, open the Settings gear and choose Subscription. Only adult profiles can manage subscriptions. The exact options can vary if your account is billed through another company.

Troubleshooting frozen or broken ad breaks
- Pause the program. Check whether the interruption is marked as an ad break on the progress bar.
- Wait for the countdown. Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded. If the timer completes but playback does not return, treat it as a playback failure rather than simply a long commercial break.
- Sign out and restart. Close the app, sign out, restart the streaming device, and reopen HBO Max.
- Update everything. Install the latest app and device updates.
- Check your connection. HBO Max lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. A slow connection can affect playback, although these figures do not prove that a network problem caused an ad-specific failure.
- Reinstall the app. If the issue continues, reinstall HBO Max using the device-specific instructions in its troubleshooting guide.
- Record the details. Note the title, device, time, ad brand, whether the timer moved, and what happened afterward.
- Send feedback. HBO Max asks users reporting an advertisement to identify the product or brand and the movie or show being watched. Use the official feedback form.
Avoid assuming that an ad blocker is a supported fix. HBO Max’s troubleshooting guidance tells users to disable ad-blocking software while diagnosing playback. Blocking tools may fail on televisions, violate service terms, or cause broken playback instead of cleanly removing commercials.
Is upgrading worth it?
If the main problem is ordinary commercials during movies and episodes, Standard is the most direct upgrade. At the currently listed U.S. prices, it costs $7.50 more per month than Basic with Ads and is described as ad-free for on-demand shows and movies.
Premium costs $12 more per month than Basic. It is more appropriate for households that also want four simultaneous streams, 4K where available, Dolby Atmos where available, and 100 downloads. Standard lists two simultaneous streams, 1080p playback, and 30 downloads, so it may be the better value for someone who only wants fewer interruptions.

Upgrading is not guaranteed to fix unrelated app, device, account, or network problems. It also does not necessarily remove advertising from live events or all promotional trailers.
Third-party billing can limit your options
If you subscribed through Apple, Google Play, Roku, Samsung, Amazon, Prime Video Channels, Xfinity, Cox, Verizon, Xumo, or another provider, plan changes may need to be handled there rather than inside HBO Max.
The official plan information gives a specific warning for Prime Video Channels: changing plans may require canceling the existing subscription, waiting for it to expire, and then resubscribing with a different plan. Plan changes may also be unavailable outside the country where the subscription began.

A dated Tom’s Guide comparison measured ad loads across seven streaming services and reported that shows commonly had four or five breaks including pre-roll, with differences in total added time. That was one publication’s test, not a universal HBO Max standard.

Ad placement can vary by title, format, sponsor, device, account, and region. It is therefore not accurate to call HBO Max the worst service for advertising without a dated, controlled comparison using the same methodology.
When canceling or switching may make sense
Consider canceling or choosing another service if you rarely watch HBO Max, its library is not essential, or interruptions remain unacceptable after troubleshooting and an ad-free plan still does not meet your needs. The most useful comparison is not simply which service has “fewer ads,” but where ads appear, whether the content you watch receives mid-roll breaks, and whether the service fits your budget and existing bundles.

The bottom line
HBO Max’s Basic with Ads tier intentionally interrupts on-demand movies and shows, with official U.S. guidance describing approximately six minutes of advertising per hour. Viewers are also reporting a separate and more serious problem: frozen ad transitions, desynchronized subtitles, broken seeking, and incorrect episode progression.
Check your plan first. If the interruptions are expected but unacceptable, Standard is the practical upgrade for ad-free on-demand viewing; Premium makes sense mainly for its additional streams, downloads, 4K, and Dolby Atmos. If playback is freezing or losing sync, update, restart, reinstall, and report the specific title, device, and ad. Live-event commercials and some promotional trailers may remain on every plan.
