Locket’s growth story is less about building another public social feed than about putting close friends directly on the iPhone’s Home and Lock Screens. Its widget-based photo sharing keeps a small circle visible throughout the day, while the newer Rollcall feature adds a synchronized weekly ritual. The early numbers suggest meaningful traction among younger users, but they are mainly company-reported signals—not proof that Locket is replacing TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, or BeReal.
A social network built into the phone
Locket is a private, close-friends photo-sharing app from Locket Labs, Inc. Instead of asking users to browse a public feed, it sends photos from selected friends directly to a Home Screen widget.
The basic loop is simple:
- A user adds close friends.
- A friend sends a photo.
- The image appears in the recipient’s Locket widget.
- The recipient responds with another photo.
- Repeated visibility encourages the exchange to continue.
The current U.S. App Store listing describes Locket as a Social Networking app for iPhone users and limits each account to up to 20 friends. That limit is central to the product’s identity: Locket is designed for a small social graph, not broadcasting to an audience.

Why the Home Screen matters
Most social apps depend on notifications or an intentional app-opening session. Locket uses a different distribution surface: the phone interface users already see repeatedly.

- Push-notification social asks users to return to an app.
- Feed-based social requires browsing an algorithmic stream.
- Widget-based social makes the operating system’s interface part of the social experience.
A friend’s photo can remain visible without the user opening Locket or scrolling through recommended content. That gives the app a persistent reminder function as well as a sharing function. TechCrunch described this use of Apple’s widget system as a foundation for a social network in its November 2025 report.
Rollcall turns sharing into a weekly event
The feature most directly connected to Locket’s Gen Alpha moment is Rollcall. It prompts users to share favorite photos from the previous week, using Apple’s Live Activities to appear on the iPhone Lock Screen and, on compatible devices, the Dynamic Island.
TechCrunch reported that Locket uses a recurring Sunday prompt. The important idea is not simply that Rollcall stores old images; it synchronizes participation. Friends are encouraged to share around the same time, creating a small-group event without requiring a public feed.
According to figures Locket gave TechCrunch, Rollcall generated more than 1 million shares in its first week, and well over 25% of active users were posting a Rollcall weekly. The company also said roughly 80% of Rollcall’s initial active users were Gen Alpha.
Those figures describe Rollcall’s initial active users—not necessarily Locket’s entire audience—and they have not been presented here as an independently audited demographic study.
What the growth evidence actually shows
| Evidence | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than 1 million Rollcall shares in the first week | Strong early activity around the new feature | Company-reported to TechCrunch |
| More than 25% of active users posting Rollcall weekly | A significant reported participation rate | Company-reported; the denominator is active users, not all installs |
| About 80% of initial active Rollcall users classified as Gen Alpha | Evidence of early younger-user concentration | Applies to initial active Rollcall users, not necessarily all Locket users |
| More than 91 million lifetime installs | Broad distribution over the app’s history | An Appfigures estimate cited by TechCrunch, not an audited active-user total |
| More than 100,000 subscribers | Evidence of paid conversion | Company-reported |
| Profitability since 2024 | The company’s account of its financial position | Company-reported to TechCrunch |
These measurements should not be collapsed into one claim that Locket has 91 million users or that most of its audience is Gen Alpha. Lifetime installs can include people who stopped using the app, deleted it, or installed it more than once. The strongest defensible conclusion is narrower: Locket appears to have found an effective engagement loop for at least part of the younger-user market.
Why the format may appeal to younger users
The product design offers several plausible reasons for its reported traction:
Rank #2

This fake phone is a popular kids toy for girls boys age 3-12, the great surprise Christmas birthday travel gift for kids
- A bounded audience: Sharing with up to 20 friends can feel less exposed than posting publicly.
- Less production pressure: Ordinary moments fit the format better than polished creator content.
- Reciprocity: Receiving a photo creates an obvious reason to send one back.
- Persistent connection: The widget keeps friends present without a long browsing session.
- A shared ritual: Rollcall supplies a predictable weekly moment.
- Less algorithmic complexity: The experience centers on known friends rather than content discovery.
The final two points are interpretations of the product design, not independently established facts about Gen Alpha as a generation. They help explain Locket’s appeal without assuming that all younger users share the same preferences.
Locket’s CEO, Matt Moss, told TechCrunch that Gen Z users often treated the app as a companion to Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and other platforms, while younger users were more likely to use Locket as a primary way to connect with close friends. That is the founder’s interpretation rather than a comprehensive demographic finding, but it points to a meaningful distinction: Locket may be moving from an accessory app to a main communication channel within some younger friendship groups.
Is Locket social media?
Yes, in the functional sense. Locket contains user-generated content, photo sharing, friend relationships, messaging or chat features, and a social graph. Apple classifies it as Social Networking and gives the current U.S. listing a 13+ rating.
It is nevertheless different from mass-market networks in important ways:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- It is intended for private or semi-private sharing.
- It limits the size of the friend network.
- It is widget-first rather than feed-first.
- It offers little reason to seek strangers, creators, or viral reach.
- Its value comes from direct exchange rather than public metrics and discovery.
That makes Locket better understood as a close-friends social network than as a smaller version of TikTok or Instagram.
Locket compared with nearby alternatives
| App or category | Primary experience | How Locket differs |
|---|---|---|
| BeReal | Recurring photo posting among a broader friend network | Locket emphasizes a persistent widget and a tightly bounded circle rather than a wider daily-posting event |
| Widgetable | A broader collection of social and relationship-oriented widgets | Locket is more focused on photo sharing |
| noteit | Notes or drawings sent to a friend’s widget | Locket centers more directly on photos and can support a larger close-friends group |
| Howbout | Planning, schedules, and group coordination | Locket is aimed at ambient visual connection rather than logistics |
| TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat | Large-scale sharing, discovery, messaging, or entertainment | Locket is smaller, less discovery-oriented, and more dependent on an existing friend group |
The alternatives above are comparable categories, not claims of identical features or pricing. Locket’s own App Store listing surfaces BeReal, Widgetable, noteit, and Howbout as related apps. Their current availability and purchase terms can change.
How Locket makes money
TechCrunch reported that Locket monetizes through subscriptions. The company said it had more than 100,000 subscribers and had been profitable since 2024, with a staff of about 15 at the time of the report.

The subscription model matters strategically. Paid revenue could reduce the need to maximize public reach or advertising impressions, which fits a small-network product. It does not prove that Locket is ad-free or free from engagement incentives. The App Store privacy disclosure includes categories related to third-party advertising and developer marketing.
The U.S. App Store listing displays multiple Locket Gold in-app-purchase amounts, including $1.99, $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $16.00, and $36.00 as observed on August 18, 2026. Because Apple listings can show different offers, regional prices, introductory deals, or legacy products, none should be treated as the universal subscription price without checking the in-app checkout screen.
Privacy is relative, not absolute
“Private” describes Locket’s social-graph design: users share with selected friends instead of a public audience. It does not mean that photos are impossible to copy, that recipients cannot screenshot them, or that the service collects no data.
The App Store privacy label says Locket Labs may handle identifiers, location, contact information, contacts, photos or videos, usage data, purchases, and diagnostics. Apple also states that the developer-provided privacy information has not been verified by Apple.
Parents and educators should also consider the visibility created by the product itself. A photo on a Home Screen or Lock Screen may be seen by someone holding or looking at the device. Users should review notification previews, widget placement, shared-device exposure, and who is included in the friend group. A 13+ App Store rating does not settle parental-consent, school-policy, or legal-age questions in every jurisdiction.
The iPhone dependency is both advantage and risk
The most distinctive part of Rollcall depends on Apple’s Live Activities, while the original Locket experience depends heavily on Home Screen widgets. The current App Store listing confirms an iPhone product requiring iOS 15 or later, as reviewed on August 18, 2026.
This integration can make the iPhone experience unusually visible and immediate. It also creates constraints:

- Android users may not receive the same experience or feature parity.
- Live Activities depend on compatible hardware, iOS support, and system settings.
- Widgets, notifications, and permissions may need to be enabled for the intended experience.
- Changes to Apple’s interface rules or platform policies could affect how prominently Locket appears.
For a user troubleshooting the app, the first checks are straightforward: confirm the phone meets the iOS requirement, add or re-add the Locket widget, review notification and photo permissions, and check whether Live Activities are enabled and supported on the device. If friends are not using Locket, however, no setting can solve the more fundamental network problem.
Can the growth last?
Rollcall’s early numbers show that a weekly ritual can activate an existing social graph. Long-term durability is harder to establish. The key questions are whether users continue sharing after the novelty fades, whether friends remain active together, and whether new features expand the service without turning it into another crowded feed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Locket also faces a built-in tension. Its value depends on intimacy, but growth can make a product feel less intimate. Its 20-friend limit protects the original use case, yet it also limits discovery and network effects. Subscription revenue may support a focused business, but paid features can be a barrier for teenagers and families.
The platform question is equally important. Locket’s strongest advantage comes from operating-system integration, which is powerful when it works but leaves the company dependent on Apple’s technical capabilities and policies. A durable cross-platform experience would broaden its reach, but reproducing the same Lock Screen and widget behavior elsewhere may be difficult.
What Locket’s moment really means
Locket’s reported Gen Alpha traction should be treated as a credible early signal, not a generational takeover. The app is not demonstrably replacing Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, or BeReal. It serves a different need: keeping a small circle of friends visually present through the phone itself.
That is the product’s meaningful innovation. Locket turns the operating system’s most frequently viewed surfaces into a social layer, then uses Rollcall to add a shared weekly habit. Whether that becomes a lasting alternative to public-feed social media will depend on retention, platform reach, privacy practices, and the company’s ability to preserve intimacy as it grows.
