King Charles’s cancer type has not been disclosed. A later report said cancer experts advised that addressing people affected by all forms of cancer, rather than naming his own condition, would allow his message to reach a wider audience. That explanation is attributed to reporting, not to the King’s own public statement or Buckingham Palace’s original announcement.
What did Buckingham Palace say about the diagnosis?
On 5 February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that tests had identified a form of cancer during the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement. The Palace described the cancer as a separate issue from that benign prostate condition. It did not name the cancer type.
A Palace spokesperson told ABC News that the only further detail being shared at the time was that the King did not have prostate cancer: “No further details are being shared at this stage, except to confirm that His Majesty does not have prostate cancer.” The specific type remains undisclosed in the sources cited here; claims naming a particular cancer are speculation unless confirmed in a later official statement.
Why did the King announce that he had cancer?
The Palace said the King chose to share the diagnosis to prevent speculation and help the public understand cancer’s effects. Its 5 February statement said: “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

That was the Palace’s stated reason for announcing the diagnosis. The statement did not explain why the King chose not to identify the type.
What explanation was later reported for keeping the type private?
A Marie Claire report published on 13 December 2025 quoted royal editor Rebecca English saying the King had been advised that less specificity would let his message reach the widest audience. The report also quoted a Palace spokesperson, via People, saying cancer experts felt it was preferable for him to address people affected by all forms of cancer rather than his own specific condition: “The advice from cancer experts is that, in his determination to support the whole cancer community, it is preferable that His Majesty does not address his own specific condition but rather speaks to those affected by all forms of the disease.”

This is a later reported explanation, not a direct statement from the King and not the rationale given in the February 2024 announcement. It describes a communication choice; it does not establish details about his diagnosis or individual treatment.

The Palace said regular treatment had begun and that, on medical advice, the King would postpone public-facing duties. It also said he would continue state business and official paperwork as usual. The announcement did not provide the cancer type, stage, prognosis or treatment details.
