Kim Kardashian was a celebrity guest in SNL50: The Anniversary Special, which NBC announced as part of the show’s 50th-anniversary programming. On air, she appeared in a revived Maharelle Sisters sketch with Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell. The reporting confirms her guest booking and her on-screen role. It does not include an official explanation from NBC or the show’s producers for choosing her, so any account of her motive is interpretation rather than a stated reason.
What the special was
NBCUniversal described SNL50: The Anniversary Special as a three-hour primetime celebration of Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary. It was scheduled for February 16, 2025, from 8 to 11 p.m. Eastern, on NBC and on Peacock. The Associated Press described it as a three-hour live telecast honoring the anniversary, built around announced celebrity guests as well as alumni of the show’s history.
That distinction matters for the question. Kardashian was not a cast member and was not presented as one. AP separated the celebrity guests from the returning alumni, and she belongs to the first group.
Why she was on the guest list
Kardashian’s name appeared in the guest lineup NBC announced ahead of the broadcast. Other names on that initial list included Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks, Miley Cyrus, Robert De Niro, and Martin Short. Being on a published guest list establishes that she was a planned participant. It does not establish why the producers wanted her specifically.

How to read the sketch choice
A anniversary special that revisits old characters tends to pair former cast members with recognizable outside names, and a sketch built on a familiar bit gives a famous guest an easy, clearly defined place in the show. That is a reasonable reading of how the segment was put together. It is still an inference drawn from the format and the lineup, not a reported decision.
Two points are not inference. The first is that Kardashian was announced as a guest. The second is that she performed in a sketch with Wiig and Ferrell. Anything beyond those two facts should be labeled as interpretation.

A quote that does not answer the question
NBCUniversal’s anniversary overview includes a statement from Mark Marshall, Chairman, NBCUniversal Global Advertising & Partnerships: “For five decades, ‘SNL’ has been one of the most desired properties for marketers, and we are thrilled to have these Presenting Sponsors join us for the 50th anniversary season as we honor this iconic show.” The statement concerns anniversary sponsors. It says nothing about Kardashian’s booking and should not be read as an explanation of her appearance.
