Thuy Trang, the actress who played Trini Kwan, the original Yellow Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, died on September 3, 2001, at age 27. Her castmates have since described her as a hard worker, a warm presence on set, and, in Walter Jones’s words, the heart of the team. Their memories, along with her own words from a 2000 phone call, are the clearest record of who she was to the people who worked beside her.
What is confirmed about her death
Two sources give the core facts. A fan-run memorial page dated September 14, 2001, reports that Trang died in a car accident on September 3, 2001. Complex, in a 2018 article summarizing an Entertainment Weekly oral history, reports her age as 27. Neither the memorial page nor the Complex piece is a family statement or an official record, and this article does not add details about the crash, the location, or anyone involved beyond that. Readers looking for those specifics will find them only in weaker accounts, which are not reliable enough to repeat.
Who Trini Kwan was on the show
Trang played Trini Kwan, the original Yellow Ranger, in the early seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The character was one of the five original teenage team members, and the cast members who remember Trang describe her as central to the group’s chemistry rather than as a supporting figure. That framing matters for the rest of the remembrances below, because most of them come from people who spent long days on set with her.
What the original cast remember
Jason David Frank
Jason David Frank, who played the Red Ranger, recalled that Trang was often hurt during filming because she committed fully to physical scenes. He described her as someone who stayed positive through it. In his words, as quoted by Complex: “I remember Thuy was always getting hurt on set. She put her all into the scenes, so sometimes things happen. I especially remember her having to be carried around a lot due to getting hurt. She was always so positive and gave her all. I’ll always remember that about her.”

Amy Jo Johnson
Amy Jo Johnson, who played the Pink Ranger, described Trang’s personality as the thing she remembers most. As quoted by Complex: “I’ll always remember [Thuy’s] spunky, strong personality. She was such a bright light. It’s hard to believe she’s gone.”
David Yost
David Yost, who played the Blue Ranger, recalled that after he heard she had died, he called her voicemail. The detail is small, but it is one of the few accounts in the cast’s own telling that describes a personal reaction rather than a professional assessment. Yost has also spoken about how much the character of Trini mattered to young girls and to Asian women watching the show. That is his view as a cast member. It is not a measured finding about audiences, and no survey or study is cited for it.

Walter Jones
Walter Jones, who played the Black Ranger, has been the most direct about why the cast wanted to speak publicly about Trang. In an interview with Inverse about the 30th-anniversary special, he said: “It was beyond time we paid tribute to Thuy.” He also explained the timing. When she died, the show’s audience were still children, and the cast did not want to raise it with them. “But they remembered. Now they’re grown. And they want to talk about it too.”
In a separate interview, Jones said he was glad the cast could finally say goodbye: “I personally, I was really happy that we were able to finally say goodbye to her, meaning that we could come together as a group within Power Rangers and fandom and give kudos to who she was and what she provided within Rangers because…I think she was the heart of our team.”

The 30th-anniversary tribute in Once & Always
The 30th-anniversary special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always carried the remembrance into the franchise’s own story. Trini’s daughter, Minh, appears in the special, and that storyline is the vehicle the cast used to honor Trang on screen. The fictional arc is best understood as the context for the tribute rather than as a separate subject. The cast’s interviews describe it as their way of saying goodbye, not as a retrospective of the character’s history.
Trang’s own words
A message from Trang appears on the fan memorial page. It describes a 2000 phone call and is presented as her account, not as a newly recorded interview. In it she says: “Tell all the fans that I completely adore them, and tell them I say, ‘Thank you so much,’ for their love and support; and that I miss them terribly, and hopefully I get to see them or they get to see me up on the screen soon. And send my love, definitely.”

The personal recollections come from people who knew Trang. The statements about the special describe creative choices made to honor her. Keeping those two kinds of statement separate is the most reliable way to read the material.
