As of October 8, 2026, WWE’s current champion listings name Sami Zayn as Undisputed WWE Champion, and WWE’s Night of Champions 2026 results say Zayn won that title from Rhodes and Gunther. The belt and the title are separate things, and the rest of this article explains why the distinction matters.
What the Winged Eagle design is
The Winged Eagle is a historic design of the WWE Championship, not a separate championship. WWE’s official championship history dates the design to 1988. It debuted on The Main Event during the WrestleMania III rematch between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.
WWE says the design represented the championship for nearly a decade. Among the champions it names as carrying the belt are Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. The belt kept its gold plates while the strap changed, and The Ultimate Warrior wore versions with white, purple and blue straps.
WWE describes the Winged Eagle as “arguably the most popular variation” of the championship. That is WWE’s own characterization. No independent audience, sales or poll measurement supports it, so it is best read as the company’s view of its own history.

Why the belt came back
Cody Rhodes addressed the belt’s return in an interview excerpt published by ProWrestling.net from Insight with Chris Van Vliet. He said the belt was initially meant to appear for one night:
“I don’t think there was ever talk of making it the belt, but it was definitely only supposed to be there for one single night.”

Rhodes said the design later appeared again, including above the ring and in other WWE contexts, and that he was pleased Kevin Owens carried it into WWE headquarters. In the same excerpt he described the kind of reign he wanted, with more frequent defenses and matches that leaned toward sports rather than entertainment: “I want to be defending this more frequently, and I want the matches to be a little bit less entertainment, a little bit more sports.”
Why Owens has it
WWE has used the belt’s return as a storyline between Owens and Rhodes. That is the broad context for Owens’s possession of it. The sources available for this article do not establish the exact sequence by which Owens came to hold the belt, and a segment-by-segment account of its most recent on-screen moments could not be checked against a primary WWE recap at publication. Readers who need those details should consult a dated WWE broadcast recap rather than fan summaries.

The useful way to read the situation is that the Winged Eagle works as a legacy design and a visual symbol inside the angle. Holding it signals the storyline. It does not change who holds the active championship.

WWE’s profile and current title listings identify Sami Zayn as Undisputed WWE Champion. The Night of Champions 2026 results record Zayn winning the title from Cody Rhodes and Gunther. Owens’s possession of the Winged Eagle belt therefore does not make him champion.

- Belt appearance: A historic design on screen tells you about the storyline, not the title’s holder.
Because title holders change, any statement about the current champion should be checked against WWE’s listings on the date you read it.
