Director Christopher McQuarrie said the filmmakers had planned a coda, but it was never filmed: after Tom Cruise watched the movie’s final ten minutes, he felt that was already the ending.
Why was the post-credits scene cut?
The scene was canceled before the crew shot it. In McQuarrie’s account of an interview with USA Today, reported by Forbes on May 28, 2025, the coda was written and the crew was preparing to film it within a couple of days. McQuarrie showed Cruise the final ten minutes of the movie ahead of the planned shoot. Cruise then told him they could cancel the Saturday work because “this is the end of the movie. This is it.”
McQuarrie agreed that the released ending did not need a separate coda. He said he liked how the film ended and that the filmmakers had long wanted to end a Mission movie that way, while recognizing that each story has its own demands. ComicBookMovie.com’s May 26, 2025 report quotes him describing the franchise as having “a mind of its own.”
What was the cut scene supposed to show?
That remains unknown. McQuarrie declined to describe the coda, saying, “I’m not going to say because it could end up in another movie.” Because it was canceled before filming, it is not an unseen scene waiting in the credits or an established deleted scene. There is no basis in his account to identify a character, mission briefing, sequel reveal, or plot point the coda would have addressed.

What viewers will find in the released film
A ComingSoon credits-scene guide published May 19, 2025 likewise says the released movie has no narrative scene in the middle or after the credits. You can leave when the film ends without missing a post-credits continuation.
Is the coda included among the home-video extras?
No: the planned coda was never filmed, so it is not a deleted scene. The IGN video listing from August 12, 2025 identifies other deleted-scene bonus material for the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release, including a portion of the submarine sequence and a larger deleted-scene montage with optional McQuarrie commentary. Bonus features can vary by edition, so check the current listing for the format you are considering.

How this fits the film’s editing process
McQuarrie has described broader editing challenges on The Final Reckoning, including attempts to shorten the film and test different structures. In a May 23, 2025 National Board of Review Q&A, he discussed trying nonlinear and then linear versions before addressing the opening’s challenge of introducing the Entity to viewers. TheWrap’s May 26, 2025 report also describes that structural process. It provides context for the film’s editing, but McQuarrie’s stated reason for canceling the coda was more specific: Cruise felt the final ten minutes already completed the movie.
