Cobra Bubbles—often called Mr. Bubbles—was not removed from Disney’s 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch. He is still in the film, played by Courtney B. Vance, but the remake divides his original responsibilities: Cobra is a CIA agent undercover as a social worker, while a separate character, Mrs. Kekoa, handles the social-worker role. That split helps explain why some viewers felt the remake changed what made Cobra compelling.
What happened to Cobra Bubbles in the remake?
Disney’s official film page lists Courtney B. Vance in the cast of the 2025 live-action film. Disney’s production notes describe his character, Cobra Bubbles, as “a CIA agent who goes undercover as a social worker assigned to the Pelekai family.” The social-worker function is assigned separately to Mrs. Kekoa.
So the change is not that Cobra disappeared; it is that the remake separates duties the 2002 animated film gave to one character. In the original, Cobra’s government-agent background and his role assessing Lilo and Nani’s family situation converge in the same person. In the remake, his undercover mission is more directly connected to Stitch, while Mrs. Kekoa carries the family-services role.
How the two versions differ
| Story element | 2002 animated film | 2025 live-action film |
|---|---|---|
| Cobra’s role | A government agent who also assesses Lilo and Nani’s situation. | A CIA agent undercover as a social worker, according to Disney’s production notes. |
| Who handles the social-worker function | Cobra Bubbles. | Mrs. Kekoa, a separate character. |
| Where the tension comes from | The person who seems capable of separating the sisters is also the person judging their home situation. | The family-services role and Cobra’s undercover-agent role are split between characters. |
Why did some viewers object?
For viewers attached to the original, combining these roles gave Cobra a distinctive dramatic tension. He could seem intimidating because he held power over the sisters’ future, yet the same character could come to understand their bond and show compassion. When the remake assigns family assessment to someone else, Cobra’s presence can feel less ambiguous: his undercover-agent identity is more closely tied to the effort to find Stitch, while another character evaluates the family.

- Experience this funny and touching live-action reimagining of Disney’s animated classic. When a lonely girl named Lilo adopts Stitch, an alien “puppy,” Stitch helps to mend Lilo’s broken family — but not without wreaking hilarious havoc on the Hawaiian Islands.
That is a reading of how the change affects the story, not proof that every viewer objected for the same reason. A May 2025 fan discussion illustrates one concern raised before release: whether Cobra would still have a social-worker role. The thread is an example of individual audience reaction, not a measure of how common that view was. TheWrap also reported on audience response to changes in the remake, but the available sources do not quantify how many fans were specifically upset about Cobra’s role split: TheWrap’s May 2025 report.
What Disney has said—and what remains unclear
Disney described the adaptation broadly as a reimagining for modern audiences rather than a shot-for-shot remake in its May 23, 2025 account of the filmmakers’ approach. That framing establishes that changes were part of the adaptation, but it does not explain why Cobra’s social-worker and CIA-agent functions were separated.

Disney’s production notes say of the remake’s Cobra: “We explore his empathy for Nani and Lilo in the film, balancing his tough character with a sense of compassion.” The notes do not name an individual speaker for that description, nor do they connect the stated aim directly to the role split. It is therefore more accurate to say the remake still presents Cobra as tough and compassionate than to claim the filmmakers gave that as the reason for changing his job.
