Jerri Manthey says Survivor is “dying” because, in her view, the seasons have become repetitive and viewers are bored. She also argues that producers are prioritizing the franchise’s financial returns over renewing it. That is a former contestant’s opinion—not a settled verdict on the show—and Survivor 50’s strong audience figures complicate it.
Why does Jerri Manthey think Survivor is dying?
In an interview with TheThings, Manthey reportedly said, “Right now it’s dying. It’s dying. People are bored.” The available reporting attributes that judgment to a sense that seasons feel too much alike: the setting is familiar and challenges repeat rather than making the show feel newly inventive.
She also reportedly criticized the producers’ incentives. Manthey’s view is that they are trying to make as much money as possible from the franchise while allowing it to fade, likening the operation to a factory people are cashing out of. That is her accusation about the show’s direction, not independently established evidence of producers’ motives.
Why her Survivor 50 exclusion matters
Manthey’s comments came after she was left off the Survivor 50 all-star cast. On May 28, 2025, host Jeff Probst announced the cast on CBS Mornings; Manthey was not among the returnees. In a video recorded for a fan, she reportedly said she was “pissed, I’m disappointed, I’m sad,” and described the omission as “the utter disrespect” after 25 years in the Survivor community. She also said, “My Survivor chapters are closed.”

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That context matters when weighing her critique: she is a long-time alum who was excluded from a major returnee season and said she would stop watching. It does not make her argument about repetition automatically wrong, but it means readers should understand it as a personal perspective rather than a neutral assessment.
What Survivor 50’s audience numbers show
The ratings do not support a simple claim that the show was losing viewers at that moment. Survivor 50 premiered on Feb. 25, 2026, averaging 5.06 million viewers, according to CBS. The premiere was CBS’s most-watched Wednesday since 2022, up 26% from the Survivor 49 premiere and 19% from Survivor 48. It peaked at 6.18 million viewers from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. and earned a 0.95 rating among adults 18–49, its best night-one demo since November 2021.

CBS also reported 560,000 social interactions, calling it the most social Survivor episode ever. The May 20, 2026 finale averaged 5.78 million viewers, the show’s most-watched finale since 2020, according to Paramount Press Express.
Those figures show a strong response to this milestone all-star season; they do not settle whether the regular format feels repetitive or establish a long-term ratings trend. A returnee event can attract viewers for reasons that do not apply equally to every season. The available numbers therefore challenge a blanket claim of immediate audience collapse, but they cannot prove that Manthey’s concerns about sameness are unfounded.

How to read Manthey’s claim
“Dying” is Manthey’s description of the show’s creative condition, not a literal statement that Survivor has ended or that its audience is demonstrably shrinking. Her criticism is about the perceived experience—repeated locations and challenges, and a sense that the format is no longer surprising. The 2026 ratings provide a counterpoint about viewership, while leaving the artistic question open: whether the series can keep an audience and still feel fresh to longtime viewers.
