Rebecca Romijn played Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy; Jennifer Lawrence took over as Raven/Mystique in 2011’s X-Men: First Class because the film went back to an earlier chapter of the character’s life. The change is best understood as a younger-era recasting for a prequel, not as evidence Romijn was fired or that the actresses had a behind-the-scenes conflict.
Why the films changed actresses
X-Men: First Class, released June 3, 2011, tells an earlier story, before Charles Xavier and Magneto became enemies. Its official studio page lists Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Romijn, meanwhile, is credited in the original trilogy, including X-Men: The Last Stand, released May 26, 2006; the studio cast list identifies her as Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.
The timeline gives the clearest explanation: the prequel needed a Raven at a different stage of her life and identity. The available accounts do not document a firing, dispute, performance problem, or controversy behind Romijn’s departure from the role.
Lawrence played Raven before she was fully Mystique
Lawrence described her First Class character as a younger, less certain Raven Darkholme. In a 2010 interview with Assignment X, reproduced by the X-Men: First Class archive, she said: “For most of the movie, I’m ‘me’ as Raven Darkholme. This is before she’s a mutant and proud as Mystique. In FIRST CLASS, Raven’s more of an insecure teenager who’s dealing with the insecurity that she’s blue and scaly. Then she learns to start embracing it.”

That arc distinguishes the portrayals by story period and character development, rather than treating Lawrence as simply repeating Romijn’s version. Lawrence put the contrast this way: “In a sense, Rebecca Romijn and I are playing two different Mystiques. Her version is comfortable, and badass in her own skin, but my Raven is about figuring herself out, and wondering if it would be better to remain in her natural form.” That is Lawrence’s description of the interpretations, not an objective ranking of either performance.
Lawrence won the role through her audition
Chronology explains why the prequel called for a younger Raven; casting accounts explain why Lawrence was chosen for that part. Writer-producer Simon Kinberg told The Daily Beast in 2014 that the decision followed a strong audition and his experience of her work in Winter’s Bone: “For First Class, we were casting her off an amazing audition and having seen Winter’s Bone, and she hadn’t been cast in The Hunger Games films—I don’t even think a Hunger Games book existed yet—so she was a relatively unknown actress.”

Kinberg also explained why Mystique had a major role in the next film: “But I really just told the best story for Days of Future Past, and Mystique/Raven is a big part of that story.” His comments describe the filmmakers’ casting and story choices; they do not suggest that Romijn’s portrayal prompted the change. How the films connect the two eras
The distinction between the actors’ eras is part of the series’ structure. X-Men: Days of Future Past, released May 23, 2014, brings characters from the original trilogy together with their younger First Class counterparts, according to its official synopsis. That continuity links the generations of characters; it is not evidence of a conflict between Romijn and Lawrence.

Lawrence later said in 2015 that X-Men: Apocalypse would be her last Mystique film, as reported by ABC News. That later departure is separate from the original decision to cast her in a prequel.

No sourced account identifies makeup as the reason for changing actresses. Kinberg said Lawrence spent six to eight hours in makeup for First Class. For Days of Future Past, the production developed a new Mystique-body system that cut the application time in half. Those details describe a demanding production process, not the motive for casting a younger Raven.
