I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) drew a divided first response: some critics enjoyed its ’90s-slasher nostalgia, returning characters and bloody kills, while others found its story familiar and its scares or comedy uneven. What is the 2025 film, and is it a remake?
It is a new franchise entry connected to the original films, not simply a straightforward remake. Sony’s synopsis follows five friends who inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, cover up their involvement and face a killer seeking revenge a year later. The new characters turn to two survivors of the 1997 Southport Massacre.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directed and co-wrote the film with Sam Lansky. The new group includes Ava, Danica, Milo, Teddy and Stevie; Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return in their legacy roles.
What did critics think in the first reviews?
The first reviews, summarized by Rotten Tomatoes Editorial on July 16, 2025, were a mixed bag rather than a consensus that nostalgia alone makes the sequel work. Critics who responded positively found familiar franchise pleasures and an entertaining slasher; detractors saw recycled plotting, limited atmosphere or scares, and a film too conscious of its own legacy.

The split is captured by two contrasting reactions. G. Allen Johnson of the San Francisco Chronicle called it “fun, recapturing a ’90s slasher film vibe.” Natalia Keogan of The A.V. Club, in a review excerpt listed by Metacritic, faulted the film for not subverting its storyline or saying anything notable about the present day.
Where the sequel succeeds—and where it divides viewers
Nostalgia and returning characters
Callbacks and legacy characters are part of the appeal for viewers invested in the franchise. But the same familiarity can feel like repetition: Rotten Tomatoes’ current critics consensus says the film “serves up plenty of nostalgia without finding a compelling hook of its own.” The disagreement is less about whether the movie looks back than whether that connection gives the new story enough of its own identity.

Gore, scares and atmosphere
Some of the early coverage welcomed the bloody set pieces and slasher spectacle. Other criticism focused on weak scares or a lack of atmosphere. The film’s gore may be a draw if you want a graphic, brisk franchise sequel, but it did not persuade every critic that the horror itself was effective.
Humor, tone and performances
Reviewers also differed on the self-aware humor: its jokes and knowing tone worked for some, while others found the comedy uneven. Madelyn Cline received praise from some reviewers, though the first-review roundup also records mixed reactions to the cast, including the returning leads. Matt Singer of ScreenCrush offered a particularly favorable verdict: “By a small margin, it’s probably the best I Know What You Did Last Summer ever.”

Is it worth watching?
Consider it if the appeal is a familiar slasher setup, franchise callbacks, legacy characters and bloody kills. Temper expectations if you want an original plot, consistently effective scares or a sharp reinvention of the series: those are precisely the areas where early critics raised reservations. The first reviews describe a divided response, not a guarantee that the film’s nostalgia or humor will work for every viewer.

Sony currently lists the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and digital, and Rotten Tomatoes’ watch page lists Netflix streaming and Fandango rental or purchase. Streaming and retail availability can change by date and region. Sony says 4K HDR playback requires a 4K UHD TV, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player and high-speed HDMI 2.0A cables.
