If the Apple TV app is not working, the cause may be an Apple service outage, a network or device problem, an Apple Account or subscription issue, or trouble with one particular title or channel. Start by checking Apple’s System Status, then test the same content on another device or network before reinstalling the app or resetting anything.
One distinction helps: the Apple TV app is where Apple Originals, rentals, purchases, Apple TV Channels, and some third-party services appear. An Apple TV subscription covers Apple’s own subscription programming; it does not automatically include every channel, rental, or purchase shown in the app.
Quick checks before changing settings
- Check Apple’s System Status. Look for Apple TV and, if relevant, Apple Account, subscription purchase, or Apple TV Channels. A listed outage is a reason to wait and retry, not to reset your device. Status can vary by region, and a green indicator does not rule out a newly developing or account-specific problem.
- Test the connection. Open a website on the affected device, then try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If possible, test Apple TV over cellular or another Wi-Fi network.
- Try another title. If other shows play, the issue may be a particular title, purchase, download, regional right, or third-party channel rather than the whole app.
- Update and restart. Install current device software and app updates, then restart the affected device. Restart the router too if other devices or services have connection trouble.
- Check the account and subscription. Make sure you are using the Apple Account that owns the subscription or purchase, and confirm that the relevant subscription is active.
Apple’s Apple TV playback guidance also recommends checking service status, software, network speed, other devices, and simultaneous streaming when playback fails.

| What you see | Check first |
|---|---|
| The app will not open or stays blank | Device and app updates, a restart, supported-device compatibility, network access, and Apple service status. |
| It keeps loading or says it cannot connect | Internet access, VPN or security filtering, router, device date and time, and Apple service status. |
| Sign-in repeats or fails | Correct Apple Account, password, two-factor verification, device authorization, and service status. |
| No subscription appears | Whether you are signed in to the purchasing account, whether the subscription is active, and how it is billed. |
| One title or channel will not play | Title availability, purchase or rental authorization, a corrupted download, or the channel provider’s service. |
| Everything buffers or stops | Wi-Fi quality, ISP or router trouble, household congestion, and connection speed. |
| It works on a phone but not the TV | TV or streaming-device firmware, its Apple TV app, compatibility, and the TV’s network connection. |
| Audio plays but video is black | On a PC, check display drivers, browser or app updates, and external-display or DRM issues; on a TV, check its software and display connection. |
Check whether Apple TV is down
Open Apple’s live System Status page before changing passwords, deleting the app, or resetting equipment. Check Apple TV for playback trouble; check Apple Account or subscription-related services if sign-in or subscribing is the problem. If Apple reports an outage, wait and retry later. Apple notes that service problems may not show up immediately, so a clear status page is not conclusive proof that every service path is working.

Rule out a network problem
Test basic internet access on the device, then compare Apple TV with another device on the same network. If several devices and apps have trouble, the router, ISP, or wider connection is a stronger suspect. If only the Apple TV app fails, focus next on the app, account, device software, or Apple service.
- Try another network or cellular data where available. If the app works there, the original Wi-Fi or network path may be involved.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, filtering service, firewall, or third-party security tool to test whether it is interfering. Restore protection after testing; do not leave security tools disabled as a workaround.
- Power-cycle the router if the connection is broadly unreliable.
- Pause other heavy internet activity and, where practical, move closer to the router or use Ethernet.
- Enable automatic date, time, and time-zone settings. Apple says an incorrect clock can interfere with connections to Apple services.
Apple cites approximately 8 Mbit/s or faster for HD streaming. Treat that as Apple’s guidance, not a guarantee: a speed test cannot rule out Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, high latency, ISP routing trouble, or congestion from other users. See Apple’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
Update the app and device
On iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, install the available operating-system update; Apple’s guidance treats system updates as the way to update its built-in software. On Windows, update Windows and device drivers, then check the Apple TV app for an update in Microsoft Store. On Android, update Android and the app through Google Play. For a smart TV, streaming device, or console, install available device firmware and app updates using the manufacturer’s controls.

App availability and features depend on the specific device and region. Apple lists platform categories on its Apple TV app page, but that does not mean every model is supported. If the app disappeared or stopped working after a device update, check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before concluding that the device needs replacing.
Restart before reinstalling or resetting
Restart the device running the app. For a smart TV or streaming device, fully power the device off and back on; changing the television’s input does not restart the streaming hardware. Restart the router if other services or devices also have connection issues.
Reinstalling may help if the app itself remains corrupted or unresponsive, but it is not a fix for an outage, weak Wi-Fi, an entitlement problem, or unsupported hardware. It can remove local downloads and require another sign-in. A factory reset is more disruptive still: reserve it for a persistent device-specific problem after checking service status, account, network, updates, and a normal restart.

Check the Apple Account and what you are trying to watch
If the app opens but says you lack a subscription, confirm that you are signed in with the Apple Account used to subscribe or buy the content. Check whether the subscription is active and whether it is billed by Apple or another provider. If password or verification-code steps fail, resolve the account sign-in issue before repeatedly signing out or changing accounts.

The app can bring together different kinds of access:
- Apple TV subscription programming: Apple’s own subscription catalog.
- Apple TV Channels: separately billed channel subscriptions available through the app.
- Rentals and purchases: individual transactions, not automatically included with a subscription.
- Third-party services: availability and entitlement may depend on the provider, region, or a separate account.
Seeing a title or channel in the app does not prove that your current subscription includes it. If a subscription works on one device but not another, check that the second device is signed in to the right account and is supported. Also consider whether the same subscription or channel is being streamed on multiple devices: Apple recommends checking simultaneous-streaming limits, but the applicable limit can depend on the service and subscription, so do not assume one universal device count.

If only one movie, show, or channel fails
Play a different title. If that works, a broad app or connection failure is less likely. The failing item could have a temporary playback problem, regional availability restriction, purchase authorization issue, damaged download, or a problem at a third-party channel. Check that provider’s service information if the failure is limited to its channel.
For purchased content that remains unavailable, use Apple’s Report a Problem page to report the issue or review refund options. A subscription troubleshooting step will not necessarily resolve an individual rental or purchase problem.

Platform-specific checks
iPhone and iPad
- Update iOS or iPadOS and restart the device.
- If using cellular, confirm mobile data is enabled for the app in device settings.
- Compare playback on Wi-Fi and cellular to isolate the network.
- Only sign out and back in after confirming the correct Apple Account; reinstall only if the app remains unresponsive.
Mac
- Update macOS and restart.
- Test the web experience at tv.apple.com as a comparison with the app.
- If connection fails, check VPN, firewall, DNS, and security software; verify automatic date and time.
Windows PC
- Update Windows and device drivers, then update Apple TV through Microsoft Store.
- Restart and compare the app with browser playback.
- If audio works but video is black, investigate graphics/display drivers, external monitors, and browser or app playback restrictions before changing your subscription.
Android
- Update Android and Apple TV through Google Play, then restart.
- Test a different network and compare with another supported device. If only one model or OS version fails, device compatibility may be involved.
Smart TV, streaming device, or game console
- Fully restart the device and install pending firmware updates.
- Check whether the app updates automatically or has an update option in the device’s store.
- Consult the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and app compatibility.
- Try the same account and title on another device or at tv.apple.com to tell whether the TV platform is the bottleneck.
