If Hulu says it is “no longer supported on this device,” the problem may be permanent incompatibility—but it may also be an outdated app, old device software, corrupted data, or a network and location check. Start by identifying the exact device and checking whether Hulu is still available in its official app store. Then update the device and app before deciding that new hardware is necessary.
What the Hulu unsupported-device message means
Hulu uses the message when the device, operating system, Hulu app, or playback configuration no longer meets its current requirements. Streaming platforms periodically retire older hardware and software as technical, security, playback, and feature requirements change.
However, the message does not always prove that the television, phone, or streaming box is permanently obsolete. A failed app update, damaged cache, expired session, outdated firmware, location check, or proxy can create a similar experience.
Hulu’s official unsupported-device guidance should be the final authority. Compatibility changes over time, and a TV’s manufacture year alone is not a reliable test.

First, determine which problem you have

Check whether Hulu still supports your device
- Write down the exact error message.
- Find the device’s brand, model number, generation, and operating-system version.
- Open the device’s official app store and search for Hulu.
- Check whether the store offers Update, allows a fresh installation, or reports that the app is incompatible.
- Compare the model with Hulu’s current supported-device information.
- Test the same Hulu account on another known-supported device or a current computer browser.
An app that is unavailable in the store, combined with a device that has no newer firmware, is strong evidence that native support has ended. If Hulu remains available and the device can update, troubleshoot the installation before replacing anything.
Use Hulu’s separate compatibility pages for Android and iPhone and iPad. Do not rely on an undated third-party list or assume that every model in a product family has identical support.
Fixes to try, in the right order
1. Restart the device completely
Turn the device off, unplug it if practical, wait briefly, and start it again. A sleep or standby mode may not clear a failed app process. Restart the router as well only if other services show connection problems; faster internet will not make unsupported hardware compatible.
2. Install device-software updates
Use the device’s own system settings. Menu names vary by model and firmware, but common examples include:
- Roku: Settings → System → System update
- Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates
- Apple TV: Settings → System → Software Updates
- Android TV or Google TV: Settings → System → About → System update
- Samsung or LG TV: Settings or Support → Software Update
If no newer update exists, that does not automatically mean the device is unsupported—but it removes one possible fix.
3. Update Hulu from the official store
Open the official app store, search for Hulu, and choose Update if that button appears. If there is no update button, the app may already be current. If Hulu cannot be found, verify compatibility with Hulu before repeatedly attempting an installation.

4. Sign out and sign back in
An expired or damaged session can make a supported app behave abnormally. Sign out inside Hulu, restart the device, and sign in again. Keep your account credentials available before clearing data or reinstalling.

Where the platform provides these controls, try clearing the cache first. Cache removal deletes temporary files and normally preserves the installation. Clearing app data or storage is more thorough, but it may sign you out and reset settings.
These steps can repair corrupted local data; they cannot restore an officially retired platform.
6. Reinstall Hulu
Uninstall Hulu only if the device still permits removal. Restart the device, reinstall Hulu from its official store, and sign in again. Reinstallation may remove downloads and local preferences.
If the store refuses the installation because the device is incompatible, stop repeating this step. That is evidence of a platform-support problem, not an installation problem.

7. Disable VPNs, proxies, and smart-DNS services
Temporarily disable VPN software, proxy services, DNS-unblocking tools, or unusual network routing and test Hulu on a normal home connection. Hulu treats location and anonymous-proxy problems separately from device compatibility. Its internet-connection guidance is more relevant to buffering, freezing, and skipping than to a genuine unsupported-device message.

8. Test another device and network
Try Hulu on a supported phone, tablet, computer, or streaming player using the same account. If possible, test a different network or mobile hotspot. This helps separate a local device problem from an account, location, or service-wide issue.
Platform-specific considerations
Smart TVs
Samsung, LG, Vizio, and other smart-TV platforms may receive software support for different lengths of time. Check the precise model and regional variant rather than judging by the TV’s age. A factory reset can sometimes expose the problem: after the reset, the TV may need to download the current Hulu build, which may no longer support that hardware.
Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Google TV
Check both the device firmware and the Hulu listing in the platform’s official store. External players often outlast built-in TV software, but they are not permanently supported either. Verify the exact model, not merely the product family.

Android phones and tablets
Check the Android version, manufacturer updates, Google Play availability, and Hulu’s Android compatibility guidance. A phone that can browse the web is not necessarily able to run the current Hulu app.
iPhone and iPad
Install available iOS or iPadOS updates and check Hulu in the App Store. Compare the device with Hulu’s current iPhone and iPad requirements. An older Apple device may continue to perform other tasks while no longer receiving the app version Hulu distributes.
Windows and Mac computers
Try Hulu in a current supported browser with browser updates installed. Clear browser cache only if the site loads incorrectly or playback fails after an update. If playback works in the browser but not through an external monitor or adapter, investigate HDMI and display-protection issues instead of labeling the computer unsupported.

PlayStation and Xbox
Update the console system software and Hulu app through the official store, then restart the console. Requirements can differ between console generations and between ordinary on-demand playback and features such as Live TV.
When the problem is really casting or HDMI
If Hulu works on a phone but fails when sent to a TV, the phone’s compatibility does not prove that the receiving television or player supports native Hulu playback. Casting and screen sharing use separate software, DRM, and output paths.
Hulu has separate casting and screen-sharing guidance. Casting can be a useful workaround, but it may fail because of receiver support, account or location rules, network isolation, HDMI restrictions, or output protection. An HDMI adapter can encounter similar limitations.
If Hulu is genuinely unsupported
There is usually no setting, cache deletion, or faster broadband connection that can restore native support once Hulu has ended compatibility for the platform. Your practical options are:
- Use a computer browser: Suitable when you have a supported Windows or Mac computer and a working TV HDMI input. It may be less convenient than a remote-controlled app, and browser DRM or HDMI protection can still affect playback.
- Add an external streaming player: Often the most targeted solution when the television display is still good but its built-in software is obsolete. Choose a currently supported Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, or Apple TV device after checking the exact model.
- Replace the television: Consider this when the TV is also slow, damaged, unreliable, or losing support across several major streaming services.
An external player normally costs less and avoids replacing a working screen, but it requires an HDMI port, power, another remote, and sometimes a separate account ecosystem. A new smart TV is simpler as an all-in-one setup but costs more and also has a finite software-support life.

Hulu works on your phone but not the TV
The account may be valid, but the two devices use different operating systems, app builds, DRM systems, and playback pipelines. Try the TV-specific update and reinstall steps. Casting may help if both devices support it, but it is not guaranteed.

The app opens, but video will not play
Investigate HDMI or HDCP, browser support, external monitors, adapters, VPN detection, location services, firmware, and network stability. Do not automatically treat a playback failure as proof that the entire device is unsupported.
Every device fails
If Hulu fails across multiple supported devices, check the account, home location, network, VPN or proxy, and Hulu’s official support channels before buying hardware. A device replacement cannot fix a provider-side outage or account problem.
You are outside the United States
Hulu availability, device support, content, and account rules can vary by country or service arrangement. The steps above are primarily framed for U.S. Hulu customers; confirm regional availability before treating a device as defective.

Do not sideload an old Hulu package as a normal fix. It may fail authentication, lack current security protections, violate service terms, or expose the device to malware. Use official app stores and supported platforms.
When to contact Hulu
Contact Hulu support when the exact device model appears on Hulu’s current supported-device information, the device and app are fully updated, and the unsupported message persists after restarting, signing out, clearing data, and reinstalling.
Have these details ready:
- Exact error wording
- Device brand, model, and generation
- Operating-system and Hulu app versions
- Your country and, if relevant, home-location details
- Whether Hulu works on another device
- Whether the problem occurs only with Live TV, casting, downloads, or HDMI playback
That information helps support distinguish true deprecation from a local app, account, location, or playback problem.
What not to waste time on
- Do not assume every TV older than a particular year is unsupported.
- Do not expect faster internet to make incompatible hardware run Hulu.
- Do not factory-reset repeatedly when the app store refuses the current Hulu version.
- Do not assume reinstalling will help if the platform is no longer eligible.
- Do not trust an old compatibility list over Hulu’s current platform page.
- Do not buy a new Hulu plan merely because the device is unsupported; subscription access and hardware compatibility are separate questions.
Hulu’s device requirements and manufacturer menu paths can change. Check the linked Hulu pages and your device documentation on the day you troubleshoot.
