In Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, Donald Trump’s niece Mary L. Trump argues that the family environment in which he grew up—especially his relationship with his father, Fred Trump, and the family’s contrasting treatment of Donald and his older brother Fred Jr.—helped shape the adult he became. That is her interpretation of family history, not a clinical diagnosis or a proven single cause of his behavior.
What Mary L. Trump says shaped her uncle
Mary L. Trump presents her uncle’s behavior as part of a family system marked, in her account, by competition, neglect, destructive relationships and pressure to succeed. She places her grandfather, Fred Trump, at the center of that system and focuses on how Donald and Fred Jr. were treated differently.
In a July 15, 2020 interview with ABC News, Mary Trump said Donald did not receive enough love, attention and support, while her father received too much attention and pressure of the wrong kind. She summarized the contrast as: “there just wasn’t enough love, attention, support and for my father, who was quite a bit older, there was too much attention.” Read the ABC News interview.
Mary Trump argues that Donald learned to pursue winning, attention and financial rewards while avoiding responsibility and treating other people as expendable. Those are her conclusions about how the family dynamics affected him; the interviews and publisher description establish what she argues, not that the causal account has been independently proved.

What the book is—and what it can establish
Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man was published by Simon & Schuster on July 14, 2020. The publisher describes it as a family history and portrait drawing on Mary Trump’s childhood time with her grandparents and her presence at family gatherings. Its description foregrounds trauma, neglect, abuse, destructive relationships, and Fred Trump’s relationship with his two oldest sons, Fred Jr. and Donald. That description is the publisher’s characterization of the book, not independent confirmation of every episode it recounts. See the publisher’s book page.
Mary Trump holds a PhD from the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies and taught graduate courses in trauma, psychopathology and developmental psychology, according to the publisher. That background helps explain the lens she brings to the family story. It does not mean she examined Donald Trump as a patient, and the book should not be treated as a clinical assessment.

Separate recollections from allegations
The account combines Mary Trump’s own memories, stories she says circulated within the family, and her retrospective interpretation. These kinds of evidence are not interchangeable: firsthand recollection is different from a secondhand family story, and neither automatically establishes a claim independently.
One prominent example is the allegation that Donald Trump paid someone named Joe Shapiro to take his SAT. In a July 28, 2020 Washington Post interview, Mary Trump said she had heard this from a person she would not identify, had not met the person said to have taken the test, and knew of no corroboration since the book’s publication. She said she stood by the story. It should therefore be described as her allegation, with those sourcing limits made clear—not as a verified fact. Read the Washington Post interview.

A contemporaneous legal dispute also surrounded publication. In a June 30, 2020 amicus filing, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and other organizations opposed Robert S. Trump’s request to block publication, arguing that the requested restraint would violate free-speech protections. The filing records the amici’s argument; it is not a court ruling.
