Hamish Blake was named a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours. The official citation recognises his “service to the arts as an entertainer, and to the community.” A later report covered the presentation of his medal at NSW Government House.
Why did Hamish Blake receive an OAM?
The Governor-General’s official 2024 honours notes list Mr Hamish Donald Blake of NSW as a General Division OAM recipient. His citation is: “For service to the arts as an entertainer, and to the community.” It recognises both his entertainment work and community service; the citation does not assign the honour to one programme, award or individual contribution.
The official profile describes Blake as a writer, comedian and actor who has worked in those fields since 2003. It also records radio presenting for Southern Cross Austereo from 2003 to 2017, alongside podcast and television work. The profile includes his community roles and notes that he received the 2022 Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television for LEGO Masters. These details provide context for the citation, but the honours record does not say that any one of them alone caused the award.
What does an OAM mean?
The Medal of the Order of Australia is one of the four levels of the Order of Australia. The Governor-General says it is “awarded for service worthy of particular recognition.” The Order recognises Australians for outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Blake’s award is specifically an OAM in the General Division.

When was the honour announced, and when did he receive the medal?
Blake’s recognition was announced in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours list. The announcement and the medal presentation are separate events: Nine/9Now later reported that he received his medal at a ceremony at NSW Government House. The official honours record establishes the award and its citation; the later ceremony detail comes from that Nine/9Now report.
