On June 24, 2025, Stephen Colbert turned President Donald Trump’s profanity about the fragile Israel–Iran ceasefire into a political riff and an impression. A contemporaneous archived summary of a Rolling Stone report also preserves Jimmy Fallon’s joke comparing the ceasefire’s stability to an IKEA cabinet missing screws. The surviving accounts establish these examples, not a complete list of late-night responses.

What Trump said about the ceasefire

Trump spoke with reporters on the White House lawn on June 24, as fighting continued after he had announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. TheWrap reported that he said the two countries had fought so long and hard that they no longer knew what they were doing, using the F-word. The remark came amid questions about the fragile ceasefire, rather than as a general or unrelated outburst. TheWrap’s June 24 report covers the exchange and Colbert’s response.

Stephen Colbert’s response

That evening on The Late Show, Colbert played a clip of Trump’s remark, then said, “Wow, he is so mad… and/or so projecting.” He followed it with an impression imagining Trump’s frustration with the job. TheWrap reported the impression ending, “What the f— am I?”; TV Insider’s account of the June 24 episode also describes Colbert framing the imagined complaint as the job itself “f***ing sucks.”

The joke’s mechanism was to redirect Trump’s anger back toward Trump: Colbert used the president’s own profanity as a setup for an impression about the frustrations of the presidency. It was a comic interpretation, not evidence about Trump’s private feelings.

Jimmy Fallon’s IKEA comparison

An archived summary of Emily Zemler’s Rolling Stone report, published June 25, preserves a separate line attributed to Jimmy Fallon: “As of now, the ceasefire has held, and it’s about as stable as an Ikea cabinet with eight screws missing.” Unlike Colbert’s impression, Fallon’s joke focused directly on the ceasefire’s uncertain durability.

The quotation is available through the archived summary of the Rolling Stone report. The original Rolling Stone article was inaccessible, so this surviving excerpt does not establish every host or joke included in the full report.

What the surviving accounts establish

  • The event and the late-night responses discussed here date to June 24, 2025; the archived Rolling Stone summary appeared June 25.
  • TheWrap’s contemporaneous coverage documents Trump’s profanity and Colbert’s response; TV Insider independently summarizes Colbert’s episode.
  • Fallon’s IKEA line is preserved in an archive summarizing Rolling Stone, so it has a less direct source trail than Colbert’s remarks.
  • These examples should not be treated as a verified or exhaustive lineup of late-night hosts responding to the remark.
