But “the toughest man in all of pro wrestling” is a reputation, not a verifiable ranking. Haku himself has said some stories about him are true and others are made up, and he declined to call himself the toughest.
How Haku’s reputation reached across wrestling
Tonga ‘Uliuli Fifita’s career took him through several major settings in professional wrestling. WWE’s career profile says he began training competitively at age 10, went to Japan to learn sumo, and joined WWE in 1986 as King Tonga. He later performed as King Haku, teamed with Tama as the Islanders, and won the WWE Tag Team Championship with Andre the Giant as the Colossal Connection. In WCW, he wrestled as Meng and teamed with the Barbarian as the Faces of Fear.
That career gave the reputation a reach beyond one character or promotion. WWE describes him as “one of the most respected and feared competitors in and out of the ring.” In a separate feature about wrestler stories, WWE introduces an anecdote by saying Haku had “the reputation of being, perhaps, the toughest man to step in the ring.” These are WWE’s descriptions of his standing, not the results of an objective comparison.
How much of Haku’s tough-guy reputation is true?
Haku addressed the stories directly in interview highlights published by PWTorch on July 19, 2018. “I’ll tell you that some of them are true and some of them they make up,” he said. He described some confrontations as “just protecting the business and showing them what this business is all about.”

His explanation points to the culture of an older wrestling business in which performers worked to make audiences believe in what happened in the ring and to protect the business’s image. It also makes clear why dramatic stories should not all be treated as verified accounts. Haku did not confirm every tale told about him, and his comments are not a license to embellish or celebrate violence.
Most notably, Haku did not claim the top spot for himself. In the same PWTorch interview, he said, “I am not the toughest,” and named Harley Race, the Road Warriors and the Steiner Brothers among wrestlers he considered tough. That is a personal assessment, not a ranking that settles the question.

What peers’ stories can—and cannot—show
WWE’s Kevin Sullivan account
WWE’s feature recounts a story attributed to fellow wrestler Kevin Sullivan, presented as a witness to the incident. It documents that Sullivan told the story and that WWE circulated it as part of Haku’s legend. An attributed recollection, even from a participant, does not independently confirm every detail.
The Barbarian’s view
In a 2018 Sports Illustrated interview, the Barbarian called Haku “the toughest” in his prime. The same interview gives Haku’s own framing: “We are all tough in this business.” He connected his work ethic to growing up with little and wanting to provide for his family, as well as wanting audiences to believe in the performances.

Toughness is not a measurable championship, and the accounts available here do not establish an all-time winner. The evidence is strongest for a more careful conclusion: WWE and numerous wrestling peers have described Haku as exceptionally tough, while Haku acknowledged that some stories were invented and named other wrestlers he regarded as tough.
