Gabby Logan left the 7 January 2026 edition of Match of the Day about 20 minutes into the broadcast because of a family emergency. Mark Chapman took over to present the rest of the programme. The next morning, Logan and her siblings confirmed that their father, former footballer and manager Terry Yorath, had died aged 75 after a short illness.
What happened during the programme?
Logan’s departure was sudden. She left roughly 20 minutes into the 7 January 2026 broadcast, and Chapman presented the remainder of the show. Viewers were initially told only that Logan had a family emergency; further personal details were not announced during the programme in the reports available.
What explanation did viewers hear?
Entertainment Daily reported that Chapman told viewers: “Sadly Gabby has got a family emergency that she had to rush off and deal with. She’s gone to do that and I’ve come from the radio to finish the show.” This is the outlet’s report of the handover wording, not an independently verified transcript.
When was the reason confirmed?
On 8 January, Logan and her siblings announced that their father, Terry Yorath, had died aged 75 following a short illness. The Standard reported that the family described him as “a quiet, kind and gentle man,” adding: “To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man.”
