Why ESPN, ABC and Disney Channels Disappeared From DIRECTV—and How the 2024 Blackout Ended

ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels disappeared from DIRECTV for 13 days in September 2024. Here is what caused the dispute, which customers were affected, what viewers missed and how the settlement changed DIRECTV’s relationship with Disney streaming services.

The DIRECTV–Disney blackout is over. Disney-owned networks, including ESPN, Disney Channel, FX and some ABC stations, disappeared from DIRECTV on September 1, 2024, after the companies failed to renew their carriage agreement. The dispute lasted 13 days and ended on September 14, when the companies announced an agreement in principle and restored the channels to DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM and U-verse customers. Disney’s settlement announcement confirmed the restoration.

More than 10 million customers were affected; DIRECTV had approximately 11.3 million customers at the time. This was a carriage and packaging dispute—not an equipment failure—and it is not an ongoing outage. Current DIRECTV lineups still list ESPN and Disney networks, although the exact channels available depend on the service, package and local-market rights.

Current status: ESPN and Disney channels are back on DIRECTV

The blackout ran from September 1 through September 14, 2024. The companies’ announcement described an agreement in principle covering continued carriage of Disney’s linear sports, entertainment and news networks, as well as ABC-owned stations. It did not publish every final contract term, wholesale rate or package rule.

As of August 10, 2026, DIRECTV’s satellite channel lineup and DIRECTV STREAM lineup list ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNNEWS, ACC Network, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Freeform, FX, FXX, FX Movie Channel and National Geographic services, subject to package eligibility and platform availability.

What happened in the DIRECTV–Disney dispute?

DIRECTV and The Walt Disney Company had a distribution, or carriage, agreement that allowed DIRECTV to carry Disney’s linear television networks. The agreement expired on September 1, 2024, without a renewal. At approximately 7:20 p.m. Eastern Time that Sunday, ESPN disappeared during the U.S. Open tennis coverage. Disney’s other affected networks went dark at about the same time, just before ABC was scheduled to carry the USC–LSU college football game.

The blackout affected DIRECTV’s satellite service and internet-delivered services. It was especially disruptive because it arrived during the U.S. Open, the opening weeks of college football and the start of the 2024 NFL season. Contemporary reporting from CBS News put DIRECTV’s customer base at about 11.3 million.

Quick timeline

Date What happened
August 16, 2024 A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking the planned Venu Sports streaming venture involving Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery.
September 1, 2024 The DIRECTV–Disney carriage agreement expired. ESPN and other Disney networks went dark, beginning during U.S. Open coverage.
September 7, 2024 DIRECTV filed a Good Faith Negotiation Complaint with the FCC.
September 10, 2024 The companies publicly disputed a proposal to restore ABC temporarily for the presidential debate. DIRECTV also announced a later $30 bill-credit offer.
September 14, 2024 DIRECTV and Disney announced an agreement in principle. Disney’s linear networks and ABC-owned stations were restored.
August 21, 2025 ESPN launched its full direct-to-consumer service, adding a new streaming option related to the issues at the center of the dispute.

Which channels disappeared?

The exact lineup varied by service, package and language tier, so no single list represented every customer. The affected portfolio included the following representative groups.

Disney-owned sports and cable networks

  • ESPN
  • ESPN2
  • ESPNU
  • ESPNNEWS
  • ESPN Deportes
  • SEC Network
  • ACC Network
  • Disney Channel
  • Disney Junior
  • Disney XD
  • Freeform
  • FX
  • FXX
  • FX Movie Channel
  • National Geographic and related National Geographic services

Associated Press coverage confirmed that the ESPN networks, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic were among the services removed. The DIRECTV FCC complaint named ESPN, SEC Network, ACC Network, Disney Channel, FX and National Geographic among the affected services.

ABC was different for satellite and streaming customers

The phrase ABC blackout needs an important qualification. Not every ABC station disappeared for every DIRECTV customer.

Customer type What happened to ABC
DIRECTV satellite Disney-owned ABC stations were removed in eight markets. Customers outside those markets might continue receiving their local ABC affiliate.
DIRECTV STREAM In addition to Disney-owned stations, the FCC complaint said streaming customers could lose some ABC-affiliated stations not owned by Disney because Disney controlled the relevant streaming rights.
U-verse Disney’s announcement said the networks were restored to U-verse along with DIRECTV satellite and DIRECTV STREAM.

For satellite customers, the eight Disney-owned ABC markets were:

  • New York: WABC-TV
  • Los Angeles: KABC-TV
  • Chicago: WLS-TV
  • Philadelphia: WPVI-TV
  • Houston: KTRK-TV
  • San Francisco: KGO-TV
  • Raleigh–Durham: WTVD-TV
  • Fresno: KFSN-TV

That platform distinction explains why one DIRECTV household could see a missing ABC station while another household in a different market—or on a different DIRECTV product—did not. The FCC’s public notice identified these eight ABC-owned station markets.

Why did DIRECTV and Disney disagree?

The dispute was about much more than a single price increase. It involved the economics of traditional pay television, the size of channel bundles, minimum distribution requirements and the growing shift of premium programming to streaming.

Carriage fees

DIRECTV pays Disney for the right to distribute Disney’s networks to its customers. DIRECTV argued that the cost of Disney’s portfolio had become too high, particularly when the company was also moving content toward Disney+, Hulu and ESPN’s own direct-to-consumer services. Disney’s position was that its sports, entertainment and news networks remained valuable and that DIRECTV had not offered a fair, market-based agreement.

Disney said it had offered flexibility and terms comparable to those accepted by other distributors, but that it would not agree to terms that undervalued its programming. Its position is set out in Disney’s explanation of the dispute and an ESPN statement.

Smaller, genre-based packages

DIRECTV wanted more freedom to sell narrower packages, such as sports-focused, entertainment-focused or kids-and-family options. Its argument was that customers should not have to pay for a large group of Disney networks if they primarily wanted one category of programming.

DIRECTV’s FCC filing said Disney’s proposed terms made genuinely smaller packages “effectively impossible or prohibitively expensive.” That was DIRECTV’s allegation, not an FCC finding that Disney’s terms were unlawful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What minimum penetration meant

Minimum penetration is a distribution requirement. It means a network must be offered to a specified percentage of the distributor’s customers, rather than being limited to a small optional tier.

Contemporary Los Angeles Times reporting said Disney required ESPN to reach approximately 82% of DIRECTV subscribers and had broader requirements around 90% for its channel portfolio. These figures should be understood as reported terms in the 2024 negotiations, not universal rules for every current DIRECTV package.

DIRECTV objected that high thresholds undermined the idea of skinny or genre-based bundles. If ESPN must be made available in most homes, for example, a distributor has less ability to place ESPN only in a premium sports tier.

The streaming contradiction

DIRECTV also argued that Disney was asking traditional distributors to maintain broad, expensive bundles while simultaneously offering more programming through Disney+, Hulu and ESPN’s direct-to-consumer products. From DIRECTV’s perspective, customers were being pushed toward streaming while the old pay-TV distribution rules remained in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disney’s eventual agreement to let DIRECTV offer Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in selected packages—and to distribute the future flagship ESPN streaming product—addressed some of this tension. It did not mean that every DIRECTV customer automatically received every Disney streaming service.

The clean-slate and legal-release dispute

DIRECTV also objected to proposed “clean slate” and covenant-not-to-sue language. The company argued that the provisions could restrict future legal action or future complaints to the FCC. This issue became part of DIRECTV’s formal FCC filing.

Disney later asked the FCC to dismiss the complaint, arguing that DIRECTV had misunderstood the scope of the clean-slate language. Disney said the September 14 agreement included a general clean-slate release that excluded the FCC proceedings. That response was reported by TheWrap.

What did viewers miss?

The timing made the blackout especially visible. Customers on affected DIRECTV services could lose access to:

  • U.S. Open tennis: ESPN’s feed went dark during coverage on September 1.
  • College football: The blackout arrived shortly before the USC–LSU game on ABC and affected games carried by ABC, ESPN, SEC Network and ACC Network.
  • Monday Night Football: The first 2024 Monday Night Football game, on September 9, was part of the dispute’s high-profile sports impact.
  • ABC news and local programming: Depending on the market and platform, customers could lose local ABC news, Good Morning America, Jeopardy! and other programming.
  • Entertainment and factual programming: FX, FXX, Freeform, Disney Channel and National Geographic content was unavailable through the affected DIRECTV services.

The September 10 presidential debate was another major flashpoint. ABC was scheduled to carry the debate, but the debate itself was also available through CBS, NBC, FOX, C-SPAN and several cable news outlets, according to DIRECTV’s statement. It is therefore inaccurate to say that DIRECTV customers had no way to watch the debate.

The September 15 Primetime Emmy Awards were also frequently mentioned as a program viewers might miss. However, the channels were restored on September 14, before the broadcast. The Emmys were a measure of the risk created by the prolonged dispute, not an event that remained blacked out after the agreement.

Why was the presidential debate part of the dispute?

On September 10, Disney requested a temporary return of ABC for the presidential debate. DIRECTV said it offered to restore all Disney channels through September 16 rather than restore only ABC for a three-hour window, and that Disney rejected the offer.

That account came from DIRECTV and should be treated as the company’s characterization of the negotiations, not as an independently adjudicated finding. The disagreement illustrated the unusual position of local broadcast stations in a broader cable-network carriage fight: ABC carried a nationally important event, but the parties were negotiating over an entire portfolio of networks and rights.

What did DIRECTV’s FCC complaint allege?

DIRECTV filed a Good Faith Negotiation Complaint on September 7, 2024. The filing invoked Section 325(b)(3)(C) of the Communications Act and FCC rules including 47 C.F.R. §§ 76.7 and 76.65. It alleged that Disney:

  • Failed to negotiate in good faith.
  • Used anticompetitive bundling conditions.
  • Required minimum-penetration levels that made smaller packages impractical.
  • Proposed clean-slate and covenant-not-to-sue language that could limit future FCC complaints or legal claims.

The FCC listed the proceeding as MB Docket No. 24-280 / CSR-9019-C and identified the eight ABC-owned markets in its September 17 public notice.

However, the filing was an allegation by DIRECTV. The public material does not establish that the FCC ruled Disney acted illegally or violated its good-faith negotiation obligations. The immediate dispute ended through the companies’ settlement, not through a public merits decision awarding victory to DIRECTV.

How did the Venu Sports lawsuit fit in?

DIRECTV’s complaint repeatedly referred to an August 16, 2024 preliminary injunction that blocked Venu Sports, a proposed streaming service backed by Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery. DIRECTV cited the decision to support its argument that bundling practices could raise competition concerns. ESPN’s report on the injunction describes the court action.

The Venu ruling did not establish that Disney’s negotiating demands in the DIRECTV dispute were illegal. DIRECTV’s own complaint acknowledged that the court had not held bundling to be unlawful in every circumstance. The injunction and the FCC complaint were related to the broader debate over sports distribution, but they were separate legal matters.

What alternatives were available during the blackout?

For ABC: use an over-the-air antenna

A digital antenna could restore access to the local ABC broadcast signal if the viewer was within range of the affected station and had suitable reception. This was useful for ABC news, local programming, football and other broadcast events.

An antenna could not replace ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, Disney Channel, FX or National Geographic. The U.S. Open’s statement and the Los Angeles Times both pointed viewers toward an antenna as an ABC workaround, not as a substitute for the entire Disney portfolio.

For ESPN and cable networks: use another live-TV provider

Contemporary coverage named Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, YouTube TV, FuboTV, Dish Network, Comcast/Xfinity and Spectrum among the alternatives. Availability depended on the viewer’s ZIP code, package and the exact channel needed. A substitute service should have been checked for the specific network rather than assumed to carry the whole Disney lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before switching, viewers needed to verify:

  1. Whether the service carried local ABC in their ZIP code.
  2. Whether it carried the exact network needed—ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, SEC Network or ACC Network.
  3. Whether it included Disney Channel, Freeform, FX or National Geographic.
  4. Whether the service was month-to-month or involved a contract.
  5. Whether it supported cloud DVR recording for the event.
  6. Whether the offer required a separate ESPN, Disney+ or Hulu subscription.
  7. Whether it provided a true live linear channel rather than only on-demand content.

Why ESPN+ was not automatically a replacement for ESPN

ESPN, ESPN+ and the later ESPN Unlimited service are different products. During the 2024 blackout, an ESPN+ subscription did not simply reproduce the complete linear ESPN channel. Some events available on ESPN or ESPN2 required a qualifying television provider login or a separate subscription.

Similarly, a standalone Disney+ or Hulu subscription was not universally canceled by the DIRECTV carriage dispute. The dispute concerned DIRECTV’s rights to distribute Disney’s linear networks. Direct-to-consumer subscriptions were separate products, although the eventual settlement created new ways for DIRECTV to offer selected Disney streaming services.

What credit did DIRECTV offer customers?

The reported credit changed during the blackout. Early coverage from the Los Angeles Times and CBS referred to a $20 bill credit. On September 10, DIRECTV announced a later $30 bill-credit offer in its statement about the presidential debate.

These were bill-credit offers, not necessarily cash refunds, and the changing reports do not support saying that every customer automatically received the same amount. Eligibility, timing and any required customer action depended on DIRECTV’s offer at the time. The $20 and $30 figures should therefore be date-stamped rather than presented as one universal compensation policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How did the blackout end?

On September 14, 2024, Disney and DIRECTV announced an agreement in principle. The announcement provided for:

  • Continued carriage of Disney’s linear entertainment, sports and news networks.
  • Continued carriage of ABC-owned television stations.
  • Genre-specific options for sports, entertainment and kids-and-family programming.
  • Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in selected DIRECTV packages.
  • The ability to offer those streaming services on an à la carte basis.
  • Rights for DIRECTV to distribute Disney’s upcoming flagship ESPN direct-to-consumer service when it launched.

The companies called the arrangement a “first-of-its-kind collaboration” designed to give customers more flexibility. The key practical result was immediate restoration of the linear channels, but the broader significance was the attempt to combine traditional pay-TV distribution with genre packaging and direct-to-consumer streaming.

Because the September 14 announcement was an agreement in principle, it did not disclose exact wholesale rates, final package prices, minimum-penetration thresholds or every provision of the multi-year contract. It is not accurate to describe the public announcement as a fully disclosed final contract.

What changed after the settlement?

The settlement anticipated a hybrid television model: customers could continue receiving conventional linear channels while also obtaining selected Disney streaming products through their pay-TV distributor. It also created a path for DIRECTV to carry ESPN’s future standalone service.

That ESPN service launched on August 21, 2025. Disney said the ESPN Unlimited plan included ESPN’s linear networks, ESPN on ABC, ESPN+, ESPN3, SEC Network+, ACCNX and other ESPN services. The product is separate from the older ESPN+ offering and should not be treated as identical to either the traditional ESPN channel or every DIRECTV package.

DIRECTV’s current ESPN Unlimited support page says qualifying satellite packages and certain DIRECTV streaming packages can include ESPN Unlimited at no additional charge. Eligibility and activation are package-specific, so this is not a blanket benefit for every DIRECTV customer.

What the dispute did—and did not—prove

  • It showed how a single carriage agreement can affect sports, local broadcast television, children’s programming, entertainment and news at once.
  • It made minimum-penetration requirements a central part of the public debate over skinny bundles.
  • It highlighted the conflict between traditional wholesale television and direct-to-consumer streaming.
  • It did not establish that Disney alone “pulled the plug.” The agreement expired while both companies blamed the other for the failure to reach new terms.
  • It did not produce a public FCC merits ruling that Disney negotiated illegally.
  • It did not show that all ABC affiliates disappeared from every DIRECTV platform.
  • It did not make ESPN+ an equivalent replacement for the linear ESPN networks.
  • It did not mean that Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions were universally shut off.
  • It did not establish that DIRECTV won the financial dispute. The settlement contained concessions and benefits for both sides, while its full commercial terms were not made public.

Does this affect you now?

If you are seeing a missing ESPN, ABC or Disney channel today, the September 2024 blackout is not the explanation. Check the current channel lineup for your particular DIRECTV service and package. ESPN and Disney channels are generally present in the current published lineups, while local ABC availability can still vary by market, platform and package.

For streaming customers, check local-channel eligibility separately from cable-network eligibility. For satellite customers, remember that local ABC stations are market-specific. The most reliable starting points are DIRECTV’s current satellite lineup and current DIRECTV STREAM lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ESPN still blacked out on DIRECTV?

No. The DIRECTV–Disney blackout ended on September 14, 2024, after 13 days. ESPN and Disney networks were restored to DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM and U-verse, although individual channel access still depends on the customer’s package and platform.

Did every DIRECTV customer lose ABC?

No. Satellite customers generally lost Disney-owned ABC stations only in eight markets: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Francisco, Raleigh–Durham and Fresno. DIRECTV STREAM customers could also lose some non-Disney-owned ABC affiliates because Disney controlled relevant streaming rights.

Was ESPN+ the same as ESPN during the blackout?

No. ESPN+ was a separate streaming product and did not automatically provide the complete linear ESPN, ESPN2 or other television-channel lineup. ESPN Unlimited, launched in 2025, is a different direct-to-consumer product.

Did the FCC rule that Disney acted illegally?

No such merits ruling is established by the public material covered here. DIRECTV filed a Good Faith Negotiation Complaint alleging improper bundling, minimum-penetration requirements and restrictive legal language. Disney sought dismissal, and the immediate dispute ended through a settlement.
