YouTube Music stopping after a song can mean an empty or stuck queue, a background-play restriction, a network failure, or a problem with Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, or Cast. The quickest way to narrow it down is to keep the app open, try a different album or playlist, switch to the phone speaker, then compare Wi-Fi with mobile data.
Premium matters when music stops only after you lock the screen or leave the app: background playback for music requires YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium. It is not a general fix for playback that stops between songs while the app is open.
First, identify when playback stops
“Stops after every song” can describe several different failures: the next track does not load, the queue has run out, playback pauses when the screen locks, the app loses its session, or an external device disconnects. Test a single album, a familiar playlist, and a radio or Mix separately; failure in one generated queue does not prove all playback is broken.
| What happens | Where to look first |
|---|---|
| Stops only when the screen is locked or you leave the app | Premium eligibility, account, background data, battery restrictions, or another app taking audio focus |
| Stops at the end of songs while the app stays open | Queue or autoplay state, a particular track or download, app state, or a failed next-track request |
| Works through the phone speaker but not Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, or Cast | Pairing, receiver, vehicle integration, Wi-Fi, or media-session handoff |
| Works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data | Cellular-data permission, coverage, carrier, or filtering |
| Downloaded tracks work but streaming does not | Network connection or a failed streaming request |
| Only one playlist or album fails | Queue, unavailable content, or a damaged download |
| The same account fails across devices and networks | Account, membership recognition, service, or app-version issue |
Try these checks in order
- Keep the app open. Play another album or playlist and wait for the next track. Then repeat with the screen locked. If it fails only after locking, follow the background-play checks below.
- Switch outputs. Disconnect Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, Cast, or a smart speaker and play through the phone speaker. If that works, troubleshoot the receiving device before changing app data.
- Compare connections. Try Wi-Fi, then mobile data, and another network if available. Temporarily disable a VPN, private DNS, ad-blocking network profile, or corporate filter to see whether it is interfering.
- Try a download, if available. A downloaded track that plays normally while streaming fails points toward the connection or streaming request. If only one downloaded item fails, remove and redownload that item rather than deleting all downloads.
- Restart the session. Force-close YouTube Music, reopen it, and restart the phone if the problem remains. Google recommends closing and reopening the app and restarting the device as initial playback troubleshooting steps (Google’s playback troubleshooting guide).
If it stops only when the screen is locked
For music, background playback is a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium benefit. Most podcasts can play in the background without a membership, though podcast features and availability vary. Confirm that YouTube Music is signed into the Google account that has the membership; if the benefit appears missing, sign out and back in. See YouTube Music Premium benefits and the free and Premium feature comparison.

If the account is eligible, check background operation. On Android, look in the phone’s app settings for YouTube Music’s background-data and battery controls, and choose the least restrictive battery option available. Names and paths vary among manufacturers and Android versions; battery optimization is a possibility, not a guaranteed cause. Google’s background-play troubleshooting also recommends checking notification permissions and whether another app is interrupting playback.
On iPhone or iPad, temporarily test with Low Power Mode off, make sure YouTube Music is up to date, and check whether another app, voice assistant, navigation prompt, or Bluetooth control event is taking audio focus. Background App Refresh and other system behavior can vary by iOS version; none of these settings alone proves the cause.
If it stops between songs while the app is open
Start a track from the album or playlist page rather than resuming an old queue. Test an album, a known playlist, and a radio or Mix separately. If the control is available, turn autoplay off and back on, then test again. This is a diagnostic step, not a universal menu path: YouTube Music’s interface can vary by device and app version.

If every source stops at the song boundary, restart the app and phone, then compare streaming with downloads and test another device or account if practical. Do not change battery settings first when playback continues normally with the screen on.
Check the account and other active devices
If you see “Playback paused because this account is being used in another location,” pause YouTube Music on other phones, browsers, TVs, smart speakers, or car systems, then close and reopen the app. Confirm the correct Google account is active and has the expected membership. Google documents this message and recommends stopping playback elsewhere and restarting YouTube Music (official troubleshooting). Treat that error as a specific account-session clue, not proof that every account is universally limited to one device.

Rule out network problems
Google recommends a strong Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and cites at least 3 Mbps on Wi-Fi as a troubleshooting benchmark. That figure is not a guarantee: stability, congestion, the playback device, VPNs, captive portals, and other network conditions can matter. If only mobile data fails, check the phone’s cellular-data permission for YouTube Music; the setting’s location differs by platform. Test another Wi-Fi network or briefly switch off filtering software if safe to do so.
Google also recommends restarting the device, checking for operating-system updates, and clearing the YouTube Music cache or deleting and redownloading the app if other checks fail. See its playback troubleshooting steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClear app state carefully
Android
- Force-close YouTube Music, reopen it, and restart the phone.
- Open the phone’s settings for YouTube Music and clear its cache, then test playback.
- If the problem persists, consider clearing storage/data or uninstalling and reinstalling.
Clear cache before storage. Clearing storage or reinstalling can erase local app state and may mean signing in again or downloading offline music again. Menu labels vary by phone.
iPhone and iPad
iOS does not provide the same general app-cache control as Android. Force-close the app, restart the device, update YouTube Music in the App Store, and delete and reinstall it only if the problem remains. Reinstalling may remove downloads or require a fresh sign-in; behavior can vary by app version.
If it happens only through Bluetooth, a car, or Cast
The phone-speaker test is the key split. If the phone plays normally, reconnect and troubleshoot the external path rather than treating the result as proof that the app itself is broken.

- MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
- Bluetooth headphones or speakers: Disconnect and reconnect. If needed, forget the device on the phone and pair it again; restart both devices and test another receiver if possible.
- CarPlay or Android Auto: Test the phone speaker first. If that works, restart the phone and vehicle system, reconnect the integration, and check whether the connection or mobile data drops while driving. A failure confined to the car can be an integration or vehicle issue.
- Chromecast or a Cast-enabled speaker: Restart the router and Chromecast, confirm both phone and receiver use the same Wi-Fi network, and update YouTube Music and receiver firmware. Google also recommends trying another mobile device and reconnecting the receiver to Wi-Fi when casting fails (casting troubleshooting).
If only downloaded music stops
Compare one downloaded track with a streamed one. For a single failing download, remove and redownload that playlist or album before resetting the whole app. Confirm the Premium account is active and reconnect to the internet periodically so downloads can be validated. Google says music downloads can remain available offline for up to 30 days, subject to membership and travel rules; downloads are not permanent or exempt from every account check (offline listening guidance).
When a bug becomes more likely
A local queue, network, account, or device issue is more likely when one playlist, one output, or one connection is the only failure. An app or service-side problem becomes more plausible when playback stops across multiple playlists, networks, and outputs, particularly if it began after an update or occurs on one app version but not another device. Reinstalling may reset local state, but if the fault returns, repeating the reinstall is unlikely to be a durable fix.
Reports of one-song failures involving iPhone and CarPlay have been published, but user reports are not confirmation of a universal or officially acknowledged YouTube Music defect. See the reported CarPlay issue as an example, not a diagnosis for every reader.
Check for a YouTube Music update in the Play Store or App Store, install pending operating-system updates, and restart after updating. Google advises using the latest app for Premium benefits and supported-device compatibility (supported devices and app guidance). Avoid relying on a specific app version number as versions change.
Report a persistent issue with useful details
Use in-app feedback; include system logs if that option is available. Record your phone model, OS and YouTube Music app versions; whether the screen was on; the connection and output used; whether downloads, one playlist, or all playback are affected; the exact error; when it began; and whether the same account works on another device. Google specifically asks users to distinguish stopping immediately after leaving the app from stopping only after some playback in its background-play troubleshooting guidance. Contact YouTube Support if the issue is that a Premium benefit is not being recognized.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube Music require Premium to play in the background?
For music, yes: background playback is a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium benefit. Most podcasts have different background-play rules.
Why does YouTube Music stop only when I lock my phone?
Check that the correct account has Premium for background music, then review background data, battery-saver restrictions, notification permissions, and competing audio apps.
Why does it stop after one song in CarPlay?
First test through the phone speaker. If that works, reconnect or restart the phone and vehicle system and check the CarPlay session or mobile connection. Reports of CarPlay-specific failures are not proof of a universal app bug.
Can clearing cache delete downloaded songs?
Clearing cache is the lower-risk first reset on Android, but clearing storage or reinstalling can remove local state and may require downloads to be restored. iOS has no equivalent general cache control.
Recommended Free Tools
Will reinstalling YouTube Music fix the problem?
It can reset local app state, but it is not guaranteed to fix account, network, device-integration, service, or app-version problems. Try it after simpler tests and be prepared to download music again.

Why does YouTube Music stop when another app opens?
Another app may take audio focus or the phone may restrict background activity. Check for video, game, navigation, or assistant audio and review background-play eligibility and settings.
Why does it work on Wi-Fi but not mobile data?
Check whether YouTube Music is allowed to use cellular data, then test coverage and filtering such as a VPN. Mobile-data settings vary by phone.
Why does it stop on one account but not another?
The account may lack or fail to register Premium benefits, have an active playback session elsewhere, or have account-specific queue state. Confirm the signed-in account and stop playback on other devices.
Is YouTube Music down or is my app broken?
If it fails across playlists, networks, and outputs, a broader app or service issue becomes more plausible. The symptom alone cannot confirm an outage; collect the failure details and submit in-app feedback.
