Why Does My Video Have Black Bars? Aspect Ratios Explained

Black bars usually reflect a mismatch between a video’s frame and its screen—or bars already embedded in the file. Here’s how to diagnose the cause and choose what to do.

Black bars usually mean the video frame and the screen or player have different shapes—or that the bars are already built into the video. They are often intentional: fitting the whole image without changing its proportions can leave unused space. The bars alone do not mean your video, TV, or phone is broken.

What aspect ratio means—and what the bars tell you

Aspect ratio compares a picture’s width with its height. A 16:9 frame is wider than a 4:3 frame. YouTube identifies 16:9 as its standard aspect ratio for computer playback, while its player adapts to other video ratios. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance recommends uploading the video without adding padding or black bars yourself.

Bars above and below the picture are commonly called letterboxing; bars at the left and right are commonly called pillarboxing. Terminology can vary: Microsoft also uses “letterbox” more broadly for scaling an image to fit a display area.

A related distinction is pixel aspect ratio (the shape of an individual pixel) versus display aspect ratio (the shape of the displayed picture). For some legacy or broadcast formats, both matter. Microsoft gives the relationship as: display aspect ratio = (image width in pixels ÷ image height in pixels) × pixel aspect ratio. For most everyday troubleshooting, start by comparing the video frame’s shape with the screen’s shape. Microsoft Learn explains the terms and scaling choices.

Find out where the black bars are coming from

  1. Note their position. Bars above and below often indicate a frame wider than the display; bars at the sides often indicate a narrower frame, such as 4:3 footage on a widescreen screen. Bars on all four sides can mean the video is smaller than the player, or that bars are included in the source.
  2. Check the original video file. Open it in a second player or inspect it in your editing software. If the bars appear in the original or edit view, they may be part of the video itself.
  3. Compare the hosted video with the source. If bars appear only on a web page, in an embed, or in one player, the page layout or player sizing may be responsible. Vimeo notes that its clip-page design can create apparent side space, and that it does not automatically remove bars hard-coded into a source file. Check the source and an embed before changing the video. Vimeo’s troubleshooting guidance describes this distinction.
  4. For TV playback, check the content and the connected equipment. The program, TV, set-top box, and other connected devices can affect how the picture is displayed. If the issue occurs on only one input, check that device’s output settings as well as the TV’s picture-size settings. Menu names and available modes vary by model.

Choose whether to preserve, crop, or stretch the image

Option What happens Trade-off
Fit or scale proportionally The whole original frame stays visible. Bars or other unused space may remain.
Crop, zoom, or pan-and-scan The picture fills more of the display. Some of the frame can be cut off.
Stretch The picture fills the display area. People and objects can look unnaturally wide or tall.

These are different compromises, not competing ways to preserve the exact same image. Microsoft describes fit, stretch, and crop as basic alternatives; Adobe discusses letterboxing and pan-and-scan. Sony warns that TV zoom or wide modes can crop or distort the original picture. Adobe’s frame-ratio guidance and Sony’s TV guidance explain the respective editing and playback considerations.

Fix the problem that matches your video

The bars are part of a movie’s intended frame

They may preserve the complete picture. A film wider than a 16:9 TV naturally leaves space above and below when shown without cropping or distortion. Keeping the bars retains the full composition; zooming in sacrifices some of it.

Classic 4:3 footage has bars at the sides

Side bars preserve the narrower original picture on a widescreen display. You can leave the image as it is, crop the sides or enlarge it, or stretch it. Cropping removes content; stretching changes proportions.

The bars are embedded in a video you are editing

Change the project or output aspect ratio to match the intended destination, then inspect each clip. If the footage itself contains bars, you may need to crop or reframe that footage; changing the project ratio alone may not remove them. In Microsoft Clipchamp, choose a ratio preset and use the fit or fill controls as appropriate, then review clips for unwanted cropping or empty space. Microsoft’s Clipchamp instructions cover changing the ratio and checking the result.

The bars appear only in a player or on a TV

Before editing the source, compare playback in another player or an embed. On a TV, try a different picture-size mode only if you accept its trade-off: zoom may cut off image content, and stretching may distort the picture. If the problem is limited to one connected device, check its output aspect-ratio setting. Sony notes that available controls differ by TV model.

For creators: avoid adding bars unnecessarily

Export the video in the frame shape you intend to use, rather than placing a smaller image inside a larger frame with black padding. YouTube says its player adapts to different aspect ratios and recommends not adding padding or black bars directly to uploads. If the bars are part of the footage, reframe the image in an editor only when the crop is acceptable; otherwise, preserve the full frame and let the player accommodate it.
