DreamWorks presents him as guarded and fearful, which gives viewers context for interpreting his appearance—but it does not confirm that his mood, a spell, or another event caused it.
What does the movie officially say about Branch’s gray appearance?
DreamWorks’ official Trolls World Tour page summarizes the story without identifying a cause for Branch’s color. It says Poppy and Branch encounter six Troll tribes—Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop, and Rock—and try to unite them after Queen Barb seeks to make rock dominant. The synopsis does not say Barb changes Branch’s appearance, or that he undergoes a particular transformation.
DreamWorks’ technical abstract on hair effects in the film concerns animation technology; it does not explain the meaning or story cause of Branch’s color. In the official sources reviewed, no specific in-universe cause or filmmaker explanation is established.
How does Branch’s personality provide context?
DreamWorks’ Trolls character profile describes Branch as unusually cautious and paranoid about danger, and as the village’s one Troll who does not sing, dance, or hug. That characterization makes it reasonable to read his more muted look as fitting his reserved nature. It is an interpretation, however—not confirmation that his emotions literally changed his color.

Is Branch’s appearance explained by his family history?
DreamWorks’ later Trolls Band Together page says BroZone broke up when Branch was a baby and that he had not seen his brothers since. This supplies family-history context for the character, but it does not explain his appearance in Trolls World Tour.

The distinction is between what is documented and what viewers may infer: Branch is officially characterized as guarded, and Trolls World Tour puts him in a story about rival musical tribes. A connection between that characterization and a muted design is a plausible reading, but the official material cited here does not establish a definite gray transformation, its cause, or a specific intended meaning.
