John Cena has studied and spoken Mandarin Chinese. He has said he studied it for about a decade and can read Pinyin, but does not consider himself conversationally fluent. The available sources do not establish that he speaks other languages.
What language has John Cena studied and spoken?
The sources establish Mandarin Chinese. Cena has described studying the language and using it in public-facing media, including during press appearances and a Mandarin-language apology in 2021. Those examples show public use; they do not amount to a formal assessment of his overall proficiency.
How fluent is John Cena in Mandarin?
In a later interview, Cena described his level in his own terms: “But I studied Mandarin for like a decade, and I would say not even conversationally fluent.” He also said, “So if you were to put something in front of me in Pin Yin right now, I could definitely read it.” These are statements from Cena in a third-party transcript, not results from a standardized language test. An earlier ABC News interview from 2016 asked Cena about becoming “fluent” in Mandarin. That wording was the interviewer’s premise, not an independent finding about his fluency. Cena said he signed up for WWE’s free second-language program and wanted to help the company connect with audiences in China.

Why did he study Mandarin?
Cena said WWE offered employees a free second-language program and that he enrolled because he wanted to help the company build a connection with audiences in China. The account explains his motivation; it does not establish a particular level of proficiency.
Why has Cena been cautious about speaking Mandarin publicly?
Cena has distinguished speaking a language from understanding its cultural context. In the interview transcript, he put it this way: “the language doesn’t mean you know the culture.” After a promotional mistake involving Taiwan in 2021, he said he became more cautious about speaking Mandarin publicly when he could not be sure he understood the cultural nuance. CNN’s 2021 transcript reports on the controversy and his Mandarin-language apology; it confirms a public use of Mandarin, not broad fluency.
