Disney sued YouTube and former Disney executive Justin Connolly in Los Angeles in May 2025 after Connolly accepted a job as YouTube’s global head of media and sports. Disney alleged he was leaving before his employment agreement allowed and that YouTube knowingly encouraged the breach. The case was about an executive’s contract and sensitive distribution negotiations—not copyright infringement or YouTube videos.
What happened?
Disney filed suit against YouTube and Connolly around May 21, 2025, following the announcement that he would join YouTube. The reported claims included breach of contract, interference with a contractual relationship, and unfair competition. Disney asked the court for preliminary and permanent injunctions that would prevent Connolly from taking or performing the YouTube role. Bloomberg Law’s account of the filing describes the allegations and requested relief.
Who is Justin Connolly, and why did the hire matter?
Connolly was Disney’s president of platform distribution. His responsibilities included third-party media sales, distribution strategy, affiliate marketing, and distribution-related operations for Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses. At YouTube, he was expected to oversee media-company relationships and the sports portfolio, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Those roles put him close to the commercial arrangements through which media companies license programming and distribute services. Disney said Connolly was involved in negotiations with YouTube over renewal of licensing arrangements. It argued that his move to the other side of those talks could put its negotiating position at risk.

What did Disney allege about Connolly’s contract?
Disney said Connolly signed a new three-year employment agreement in November 2024. News reports described its term as January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2027, with March 1, 2027, identified as the earliest termination date. Disney alleged that leaving before that date breached the agreement. Those dates and the contract’s effect are reported descriptions of Disney’s position, not a court finding that Connolly was barred from taking another job.
Disney also alleged that YouTube knew about Connolly’s contractual obligations and induced him to leave early. In the complaint’s reported account, the timing was particularly sensitive because Connolly was involved in Disney’s licensing-renewal negotiations with YouTube.

What information did Disney say was at risk?
Disney alleged that Connolly had knowledge of its distribution deals, financial terms for content licensed to YouTube, negotiation strategies, and the specific renewal discussions between the companies. Android Headlines’ report based on the complaint summarizes those concerns. They remain allegations; the reported coverage does not establish that Connolly disclosed confidential information.
There is an important distinction between an executive’s general industry experience and protected confidential information or trade secrets. A former employer’s concern about what an executive knows does not, by itself, prove misuse or automatically prevent the executive from working for a competitor. The agreement’s full terms and the evidence about the information at issue would matter.

What is the lawsuit not about?
- Not a copyright case: The reported claims concerned employment-contract obligations, alleged interference, and unfair competition—not Disney films or shows being infringed through YouTube uploads.
- Not a direct YouTube TV pricing dispute: YouTube’s growth in television distribution and sports helps explain the business context, but the reported trigger was Connolly’s hire.
- Not proof that YouTube cannot hire former Disney employees: Disney’s theory was that this particular hire allegedly induced a breach of an existing agreement. Whether the contract and claimed restrictions were enforceable would be a separate question.
- Not the separate live-TV antitrust litigation: A different matter involved claims concerning Disney’s ESPN carriage arrangements and YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream. A separate settlement document concerns that litigation: the settlement document.
What did Disney want the court to do?
Disney sought a preliminary injunction while the case was pending and a permanent injunction as part of its requested relief. In plain terms, it wanted the court to stop Connolly from moving into or performing the YouTube job under the restrictions Disney said applied. Asking for an injunction is not the same as receiving one, and a preliminary injunction would not itself be a final judgment on the merits.
Why does the dispute matter beyond one executive?
The case reflects how traditional television companies, studios, streaming services, sports businesses, and digital platforms increasingly compete and partner in the same distribution market. YouTube’s expanding role in television and sports makes executives experienced in licensing, carriage, and distribution valuable to both sides. That overlap can make job moves commercially sensitive, especially when an executive is involved in negotiations with the prospective employer.

What is the case’s status?
The May 2025 filing and Disney’s allegations are reported in contemporaneous coverage. The available information here does not establish a later injunction ruling, settlement, dismissal, or final outcome, so none should be inferred. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that YouTube had not immediately responded to a request for comment; that describes the initial reporting period, not YouTube’s eventual position in court.
