Published reporting describes the outfit in detail but records no personal explanation from William or the Palace for the shade. The most reasonable reading is that dark navy was a formal, subdued choice for a funeral. That is an inference from the outfit and the contemporary coverage, not a stated motive.
What William wore
The Associated Press described William as wearing a dark blue suit and black tie. Euronews described the same suit as dark navy and set it against Donald Trump’s brighter blue look at the same service. Both descriptions point to a deep, dark shade rather than a vivid blue. If you are writing about the outfit, “dark navy” or “dark blue” is the accurate term. “Blue suit” is the headline shorthand, and it is only accurate in that broad sense.
Where and when the funeral took place
The Holy See Press Office published its notice on 22 April 2025. It set the funeral Mass for 26 April 2025 at 10:00 at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The AP report confirmed William attended on his father’s behalf. The notice covers the date, time and venue only. It says nothing about dress or about which royals would attend.
Why navy? What the evidence supports
- Reported fact: William represented King Charles III and wore a dark blue suit with a black tie (AP, 26 April 2025).
- Reported fact: The official Holy See notice gives the date, time and venue. It does not address clothing (22 April 2025).
- Careful inference: A dark navy suit fits subdued formal mourning dress. Contemporary coverage treated navy as more muted than the brighter blue worn by another attendee (Euronews, 28 April 2025).
- Not established: No published source records William, Kensington Palace or another named royal official saying that a personal, religious, diplomatic or style reason determined the colour.
Claims that William chose navy to signal religious identity, to make a diplomatic point, to stand apart from other guests or to depart from protocol are not supported by this reporting. They should not be presented as fact.

Navy compared with the brighter blue
The useful comparison is shade and tie. The table below shows only what the coverage states.
| Attendee | Suit as described | Tie as described | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prince William | Dark blue, described as dark navy | Black | AP, 26 April 2025; Euronews, 28 April 2025 |
| Donald Trump | Brighter blue, in contrast with William’s suit | Not stated | Euronews, 28 April 2025 |
The contrast in coverage is about shade, not rule-breaking. A brighter blue on another guest does not show that William’s outfit broke any requirement. The published reporting does not include an official ruling on any attendee’s attire.
