She said so herself before the show’s Season 22 finale in May 2024: she loved the program, but she felt she needed to go out, see the world and make new music on her own terms. That is her stated reason, and it is the one the reporting supports. Coverage about on-air controversy or behind-the-scenes conflict does not establish a cause.
What Perry said about leaving
Perry’s explanation came in two interviews in 2024, both reported by ABC News. Her words are the best evidence for why she left, so it helps to read them closely.
February 2024: announcing that Season 22 would probably be her last
On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Perry said the upcoming season would probably be her last. She put it this way: “I mean, I love ‘Idol’ so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat, you what I’m saying, Jimmy?” She added, “I love the show so much but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music.” (ABC News, February 13, 2024, ABC News report on Perry’s exit.)
She also said her fellow judges knew she had plans and had seen her working in the studio, and she described the coming year as “a very, very exciting year.” That supports the view that her music plans were already in progress when she announced the exit. It does not reveal a fuller private reasoning, and Perry did not offer one.

April 2024: the Good Morning America interview
In an April 2024 interview with Good Morning America, Perry said that judging for seven seasons had “healed my heart.” She said, “I feel so connected to America that I want to go out there again and sing and play music and hold their hands and [tour] and bring my daughter and show her and all that stuff.” She also said, “It’s been incredible to be on this journey with them.” She called the departure goodbye “for now,” which leaves a return open without promising one. (ABC News, April 12, 2024, ABC News and Good Morning America interview.)
Timeline of the exit
The chronology is straightforward and comes from independent reporting, not from Perry alone.

ABC News describes the run as seven seasons. Her exit is therefore not a sudden break: she announced it months before the finale, and the timing of the album came after she had already left the show.
How to read her reasons
Perry gave three connected reasons, and they are worth separating because each one answers a different part of the question.

- Her own creative direction. She said she needed to “feel that pulse to my own beat.” This is the core of her explanation: she wanted to set her own musical pace after years of a weekly television schedule.
- Travel and performance. She wanted to “go and see the world” and to “go out there again and sing and play music,” which points to touring and live performance rather than a studio-and-broadcast role.
- Family and gratitude. She mentioned bringing her daughter along on the road, and she described the judging years as something that had “healed my heart.” Her tone toward the show was warm, not critical.
Taken together, her account is consistent: she left to pursue her own work, and she did not frame the decision as a reaction to the show.
What the reporting does not establish
Perry’s reasons are the strongest available answer, but readers often encounter other explanations, and some are weaker than they sound.

- Criticism of her on-air behavior. Coverage has mentioned criticism of Perry during her time on the show. That criticism is documented as criticism. Nothing in the reporting shows it caused her to leave.
- Feuds, disputes or backlash. None of the cited reporting establishes a feud, a contract dispute or a backlash as the reason for the departure. Treat claims like these as unverified.
- Ratings. The sources do not tie her exit to viewership or performance numbers.
The album 143 is useful context, but not proof of a hidden motive. Its September 2024 release fits the musical direction Perry described in February, yet she announced the exit before the album came out, so the album cannot be the sole cause of a decision she had already made public.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could she return?
Perry left the door open in April 2024 when she called her departure goodbye “for now.” That is a statement of possibility, not a plan. None of the cited reporting confirms a return to the judges’ panel. If the show announces a return, that would be a new development, and it would need its own reporting.

Where to verify the claims
The statements above come from interviews reported by ABC News and the Los Angeles Times, with later context from TV Insider. Readers who want the exact wording should start with the primary reporting: the February 2024 ABC News story, the April 2024 Good Morning America interview, and the Los Angeles Times account of the Season 22 finale.
Perry’s own words are clear enough. She wanted to make her own music, see the world and perform again on her own schedule, and she did not say she left because of anyone else’s decision.
