Why Do People Walk Behind the Queen?

Royal processions have event-specific order—not a universal rule to walk behind the Queen. Coronations, the State Opening of Parliament and a funeral each offer a different example.

People do not have to walk behind the Queen as a general rule. In a royal procession, participants follow the sequence set for that particular ceremony. And when people walked behind Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, they were following her coffin—not a living monarch.

Why does the procession have an order?

Coronations, state ceremonies and funerals are organized public events. Their processions place the monarch, regalia, guards, officials and other participants in a planned sequence. That order is part of the ceremony’s public pageantry; it is not evidence of one rule requiring everyone to walk behind a Queen.

The official accounts document who went where in particular events, but they do not give one explanation that applies to every procession. It is reasonable to read the arrangements as reflecting ceremonial order and precedence, but those are interpretations—not a universal instruction stated in the sources.

What does “behind the Queen” mean in different ceremonies?

At a coronation, people follow the sequence set for the service

At Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation on 2 June 1953, the Royal Household says the procession through London after the service was designed so the Queen and the procession could be seen by as many people as possible. The reported route was 7.2 kilometres; 16,000 participants took two hours to complete it, and the procession stretched three kilometres. Those figures describe that 1953 event, not royal processions generally. Royal Household: The 1953 coronation

The sequence was different inside Westminster Abbey at the 2023 coronation. The Coronation Roll lists heralds and regalia before King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with ceremonial officials and members of the Royal Family and Household accompanying them. After the service, the King emerged from the Shrine wearing the Imperial State Crown, followed by the Queen, and joined the procession out of the Abbey. At the State Opening of Parliament, the regalia goes ahead

The State Opening has its own sequence: a coach carrying the royal regalia precedes the monarch. Parliament describes armed forces lining the route and presenting arms as the royal party passes, contributing to pageantry, security and crowd control. A House of Commons Library briefing says the Crown Procession leaves Buckingham Palace around 20 minutes before the monarch’s procession; that timing belongs to this ceremony and should not be generalized to other royal processions. At a funeral, people may follow the coffin

During the 2022 procession carrying Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin to Westminster Hall, King Charles III, the Princess Royal, other family members and officials processed behind the coffin. This was a funeral procession: the people were following the coffin, not walking behind a living Queen as a matter of everyday etiquette. Royal Household: The Queen’s procession

Who decides who walks where?

The examples show that procession order is specific to the event. The ceremony’s organizers establish the sequence, which may place the monarch, regalia, family members or officials in different positions. These accounts illustrate particular arrangements; they are not a comprehensive precedence code for guests, staff or foreign dignitaries.
