The Russians want to open the gate to gain access to the Upside Down and try to weaponize it. Netflix’s official explanation of the story describes the Soviet operation beneath Starcourt Mall as an attempt to turn the dangerous dimension into a weapon. The series shows experiments with creatures and material from the Upside Down, but it does not spell out a specific military target or a complete deployment plan.
What were the Russians trying to do?
In Season 3, Soviet operatives run a secret laboratory beneath Starcourt Mall. Their machine is designed to force open a gate to the Upside Down. Netflix’s official explainer frames the goal as weaponization: the gate would provide access to a place—and forces—that the Russians hoped to exploit.
That makes the gate a means to an end, rather than the Russians’ ultimate objective. Opening it would let them reach the alternate dimension and conduct experiments there or bring its dangers within reach.
Does the show prove they wanted to use Demogorgons as weapons?
The later prison scenes support the idea that the Russians were studying Upside Down life and material. The Season 4 recap depicts captive Demogorgons and stored Mind Flayer particles. These details fit the broad aim of weaponization, but they do not establish exactly how the Russians intended to use either one.

Joyce’s proposal to destroy the prison’s Upside Down materials connects those contents to the wider conflict with Vecna and the hive mind. It does not, by itself, reveal a Soviet plan to deploy monsters in battle.
What is left unexplained about their plan?
The series’ broad motive is clearer than its military specifics. Neither Netflix’s summary nor the events described in the recaps identify a battlefield, intended enemy, or operational doctrine. Contemporary coverage after Season 3 also noted that the Russians’ endgame was unclear at that point in the story.

So claims that they had a confirmed plan to invade a particular country or unleash Demogorgons against a named target go beyond what these sources establish. The safest reading is that they sought access to the Upside Down for weaponization, while the precise intended use remains unspecified.
How does the prison fit—and what remains uncertain?
The Russian prison in Season 4 shows that the operation’s interest in the Upside Down continued beyond the Starcourt lab. Captive creatures and Mind Flayer particles point to ongoing experimentation, but they do not fill in the missing details of a military plan.

Netflix’s Season 5 explainer raises a separate unresolved question about how the Russians’ Demogorgons could survive without a connection to the alternate world. It suggests they must have found another gate or another power source, but does not settle which. That uncertainty should not be mistaken for proof of a specific weaponization method.

No. This is a fictional motive in Stranger Things, the supernatural science-fiction series created by the Duffer Brothers. The Russians’ pursuit of the gate belongs to the show’s story, not to a real scientific or historical account.
