AMC and Bass both described the circumstances only in general terms, and the public statements cited at the time do not identify a specific cause. A scheduling conflict involving Bass’s Avatar work has not been confirmed.
What AMC and Bailey Bass said about the recast
On March 31, 2023, as Season 2 production was set to begin in Prague, AMC announced that Hayles would play Claudia. In a statement reported by TheWrap, the network said: “For a variety of reasons, Delainey Hayles will appear as Claudia in season two.” It praised Bass’s Season 1 performance and wished her well, but did not explain those reasons.
Bass likewise did not name a specific cause. Her statement, also reproduced by TheWrap, said: “Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances I’m unable to return to Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ for the second season.” She called Claudia a dream role, wished Hayles luck, and thanked AMC, the producers, cast, crew, and fans. TVLine’s contemporaneous report also quoted the two nonspecific explanations.
Did Avatar make Bailey Bass leave?
The cited reports mention that Bass played Tsireya in Avatar: The Way of Water and was expected to reprise the role in future franchise installments. They do not connect that work to her departure from Interview with the Vampire, however. Neither AMC nor Bass identified an Avatar commitment, a scheduling conflict, or another particular production issue as the reason.

Fans may speculate about scheduling, but speculation is not a confirmed explanation. The accurate answer is that Bass said unforeseen circumstances prevented her return, while AMC referred only to a variety of reasons.
How Delainey Hayles was chosen
The process that selected Hayles is a separate question from why Bass left. In a June 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Rolin Jones said the casting director brought four actors in to audition for Claudia. After discussing the auditions, the team quickly agreed on Hayles. Jones described their response to her performance; he did not present the auditions as an explanation for Bass’s departure.
Hayles later described her audition in an AMC interview. Jacob Anderson was present, along with creator Rolin Jones and director Levan Akin, and she performed a scene with Anderson. Hayles also discussed building a working relationship with him in Prague.

The recast came as Claudia’s story moved into new territory. Jones described her traveling through Europe with Louis and arriving in Paris, where they encounter a vampire coven that performs in a theater. In AMC’s interview, Hayles discussed Claudia’s role in that setting as Baby Lulu in the Théâtre des Vampires production. Those story details explain the character’s Season 2 context, not the real-world reason for the casting change.
