Maya Kowalski’s most recent public updates are about court proceedings, not her personal routine. The Florida appeals court reversed and remanded the judgment in her family’s case against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in October 2025. A related Florida Supreme Court docket was listed as open in the record reviewed here, while public reporting in June 2026 described a separate lawsuit against the family’s former attorneys. Reliable sources do not establish where Maya lives or what she does day to day.

Take Care of Maya, released by Netflix in 2023, brought wide attention to the family’s case. It is background to the story, not evidence of Maya’s present circumstances or of the legal status after later appeals.
What happened to the hospital case?
In November 2023, a jury found for the Kowalski family in its case against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. The trial judge later reduced the award. On October 29, 2025, Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal reversed the judgment and remanded the case with instructions. The court’s disposition states, “Reversed and remanded with instructions.” Read the appellate opinion.

That reversal means the jury verdict and reduced judgment should not be presented as a final payment to Maya or her family. The sources reviewed do not show that the family collected the award. Because secondary coverage differs in how it totals the verdict and subsequent reduction, a single headline figure would risk conflating the jury’s award with the later judgment.
What is the status of further review?
- January 5, 2026: The Second District denied rehearing and rehearing en banc.
- January 22, 2026: The court issued its mandate.
- February 2026: Notices invoked the Florida Supreme Court’s discretionary jurisdiction.
- March–April 2026: The Florida Supreme Court docket for case SC2026-0205 listed jurisdiction briefs and was marked open in the docket record reviewed here.
An open docket with jurisdiction briefing does not establish that the Florida Supreme Court granted or denied review. The docket is a changing record; consult the Florida Supreme Court case docket for its latest status. The Second District’s case docket records the rehearing, mandate, and notices.

What is the lawsuit against the former attorneys about?
WUSF reported on June 22, 2026, that Maya Kowalski and her family sued former attorneys Gregory and Jennifer Anderson. The report describes allegations concerning fee arrangements and the handling of funds, and says the Andersons denied wrongdoing. These are claims and denials in a separate dispute; the report does not establish that a court has found the allegations true or false. Read WUSF’s report.

- Established: The appeals court reversed and remanded the hospital-case judgment, and the Florida Supreme Court docket reviewed here was open with jurisdiction briefs listed.
- Separately reported, not adjudicated here: The family’s allegations against its former attorneys and the attorneys’ denial.
- Not established by the sources reviewed: Maya’s current home, job, relationship status, day-to-day routine, or present health.
Older accounts of Maya’s medical history do not establish her current health. The most responsible answer to “Where is she now?” is therefore that her personal circumstances have not been reliably reported in the sources reviewed; the verifiable updates concern ongoing legal proceedings.
