If Netflix won’t cast, first check two things that ordinary troubleshooting often misses: whether your Netflix plan allows mobile-to-TV casting, and whether Netflix supports your particular TV or streaming device as a cast target. Then check that your phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. For a missing Cast icon on iPhone or iPad, enable Netflix’s Local Network permission; if the device appears but connection fails, check the Netflix profile, update the apps, and restart the devices.
Identify what is failing
Match your symptom to the right branch before resetting anything:
- No Cast icon: the plan, target device, phone operating system, or app permission may not support casting.
- “No devices found” or no TV in the list: suspect Wi-Fi discovery, network isolation, a sleeping device, or a permission issue.
- The TV appears, but connection fails: check the Netflix account and profile, app sessions, and plan/device compatibility.
- Connection succeeds, but playback will not start: look for a plan warning, update the apps, and retry after a full restart.
- Playback starts, but the phone’s controls stop responding: close and reopen Netflix, then restart the phone.
- You are trying AirPlay or generic screen mirroring: Netflix does not support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad, and screen mirroring is not a guaranteed workaround.
If Netflix shows a specific error or plan message, use the matching section below rather than assuming the Wi-Fi is at fault.

Check Netflix casting compatibility first
Having Netflix on your TV is not the same as being able to cast Netflix to it from a phone. A TV can run its own Netflix app without accepting Netflix mobile casting. Likewise, Google Cast support in another app does not prove that Netflix supports that device as a cast target. Netflix’s listed mobile casting targets are Chromecast 3rd generation or older without a physical remote, Google Nest Hub Smart Displays, and select cast-enabled Vizio and Compal TVs.

That list is narrower than the range of TVs and players on which Netflix can be watched directly. Netflix’s broader supported-device list includes many TVs and streaming devices, but that does not mean each one accepts playback cast from a phone. In particular, do not assume that every Chromecast-branded device, Google TV device, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or smart TV is a supported Netflix mobile cast target. Netflix’s casting guidance specifically names older Chromecast generations; check its current list for your model.
If your device is not listed, try opening Netflix with the TV or streaming device’s own remote. That is usually the simplest option when the device has a native Netflix app.
Check your Netflix plan before troubleshooting the router
Netflix says casting or mirroring mobile playback to a TV is available on Standard and Premium plans. Its ad-supported experience does not allow you to use a TV as the display for Netflix content playing on a mobile device. Plan names, availability, and details can vary by country and may change, so check the plan on your account if you are unsure.
This restriction is specifically about using a TV to display playback from a mobile device. It does not mean that Netflix cannot run natively on every TV with an ad-supported plan; the TV’s app and the plan must each support the way you want to watch.

If you see “Your plan does not support streaming on this device,” Netflix says the device may need an update or may not support the ad-supported experience. See its guidance for that plan warning. Changing plans may address a plan restriction, but it will not fix a different problem such as an unsupported cast target, poor Wi-Fi discovery, or a disabled iPhone permission.
Fix a missing Cast icon or “No devices found”
1. Put both devices on the same home network
Connect the phone or tablet and the TV or streamer to the same home Wi-Fi network. Both need local network access to discover one another; simply having internet on each device is not enough. Google’s Cast troubleshooting guidance also identifies a shared network as a core requirement.
- If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try putting both devices on the same one.
- Make sure neither is on guest Wi-Fi, an isolated IoT network, or a different mesh network name. Guest and client-isolation settings can block local discovery even when both devices have internet.
- Turn off cellular data temporarily while testing, and check that the phone has not silently switched to another saved Wi-Fi network.
- On Android, a phone may automatically switch between networks. If that is happening, forget the alternate network or temporarily disable Adaptive connectivity while you initiate the cast.
A TV showing that it is connected to Wi-Fi does not by itself prove your phone can discover it. VPNs, security software, public or enterprise Wi-Fi, and router isolation settings are other possible discovery obstacles; test those only as relevant to your setup.

3. On iPhone or iPad, allow Local Network access
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to and tap Netflix.
- Turn on Local Network.
- Reopen Netflix and try casting again.
Netflix lists iOS or iPadOS 16 or later for casting in its Cast-icon troubleshooting guidance. Google’s broader Cast documentation also explains that Local Network access is required for discovery on supported Apple operating systems, but follow Netflix’s app-specific requirements for Netflix.
4. Update the phone and the relevant apps
Netflix’s current Cast-icon guidance lists Android 9 or later for casting. A separate Netflix page about using Netflix on Chromecast still says Android 7 or later, so the help pages are inconsistent. If you are on Android 7 or 8, update the phone if possible; do not assume the older figure guarantees that current Netflix casting will work.
On Android, check Settings > System > Software updates (the exact labels vary by phone), then update Netflix in Google Play. Update Google Home and Google Play Services as well. On iPhone or iPad, update Netflix and install any available iOS or iPadOS update compatible with your device. Force-close Netflix and reopen it after updating.
Fix a device that appears but will not connect
Check the Netflix account and profile
If the TV appears in the Cast list but Netflix rejects the session, make sure the controller phone and target use the same Netflix account and profile. For error 16002, Netflix specifically directs users to match the account and profile on both devices.

- App Limitations: Please be aware that certain apps with "HDCP" protocol, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, Hulu, Comcast TV, Xfinity, Vudu, Sky Go, BT Sport, may not be supported due to copyright protection.
- On the phone, open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile icon.
- Switch to another profile, then switch back to the intended profile.
- Try casting again.
This is different from a discovery failure: the device can be visible, but Netflix may reject playback because the account or profile state does not match. Netflix also notes that cellular or satellite internet can be relevant to this error; if you use either, consult its error-specific guidance.
Fully restart both devices
A standby cycle may not clear a stuck session. Netflix recommends a full device power-off:
- Close Netflix completely on the phone.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device. If it has a power cable, unplug it.
- Leave it off for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect and power it on, then restart the phone or tablet.
- Open Netflix and try again.
If the problem remains, restart the home network as Netflix describes in its “No devices found” troubleshooting: turn off the TV or streamer; unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds; reconnect them and wait about one minute; then turn on the streaming device and retry. This can restore discovery, but it is not a cure for a plan restriction or unsupported target.
Update apps before resetting Netflix
Update Netflix and, on Android, Google Home and Google Play Services. Then force-close and reopen Netflix. If you still cannot cast, sign out and back in or consider resetting or reinstalling Netflix. Treat that as a later step: Netflix warns that resetting its Android app signs you out and deletes downloads saved on the device.

When Netflix starts but the controls stop responding
If playback is already running and the phone’s player controls have stopped responding, the connection may be stale rather than undiscovered. Close Netflix completely and reopen it; if needed, restart the phone and retry. Netflix has separate guidance for unresponsive player controls on Chromecast, including device-specific steps. Start with the simple app and device restarts before resetting anything.
AirPlay, screen mirroring, and computers
AirPlay and generic mirroring
Netflix does not support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad. Use the TV’s native Netflix app, a supported Netflix Cast target, or a compatible wired video connection instead. Android’s built-in screen-mirroring feature may work on some device combinations, but Netflix does not guarantee it across phones, TVs, or mirroring apps. DRM, app support, device certification, and plan limits can still prevent playback.
Netflix supports wired connections in some phone and tablet setups, but compatibility depends on the exact device, port, cable, and adapter. Check that the phone supports video output and that the adapter is compatible with Netflix playback before buying one. Netflix notes that a wired setup may show black bars and does not support autoplaying the next episode in some configurations.

For Netflix.com, the computer and Cast target still need to be on the same network. Google notes that casting from Netflix.com may require the Google Cast extension in a compatible browser setup; browser and extension behavior can change. If available, the native Netflix app on the TV or a supported mobile casting workflow is generally the simpler route.

If casting is not supported, choose another way to watch
- Use the TV’s Netflix app. This is the best first alternative when the TV or streamer has a working Netflix app and you have its remote. It avoids phone discovery entirely.
- Use a dedicated streaming device. If the TV is old or its built-in Netflix app is slow or unsupported, a Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or Google TV device can provide Netflix playback controlled by its own remote. Choose based on your preferred ecosystem and check Netflix support for the specific model. A new streamer does not remove an ad-supported plan restriction or fix an isolated Wi-Fi network.
- Try a wired video adapter. This can avoid Wi-Fi discovery if your phone or tablet supports video output and the cable or adapter is compatible with Netflix’s playback protections. Check the exact model and adapter before purchasing.
- Contact the right support team. Contact Netflix for account, plan, profile, or Netflix-app errors; the TV or streamer manufacturer for device failures; and your router or internet provider if multiple devices on the home network cannot discover one another.
