Bryan Danielson used “The American Dragon” as one of his identities during his independent-wrestling years, before he became Daniel Bryan in WWE. In a 2021 interview, he described wrestling for 10 years on the independents as “Bryan Danielson” and “The American Dragon.” The sources available for this explainer show how the name was used and how it sits alongside his later WWE name. They do not establish who first coined the nickname, when it was first used, or why Danielson chose it.
What the nickname was attached to
“The American Dragon” belonged to Danielson’s independent-circuit identity, the period before WWE signed him and asked him to adopt a new ring name. Danielson made that connection himself. In a 2021 interview with Complex, he said:
“Bryan Danielson, my real name, I wrestled for 10 years on the independents as Bryan Danielson and ‘The American Dragon’ and all that stuff.”
The “10 years” figure is Danielson’s own retrospective description of that period. It is not a career statistic that has been independently tallied, and it does not give exact dates for when he began or stopped using either name.

How the Daniel Bryan name came about
The clearest documented explanation for a name change in Danielson’s career concerns WWE, not the nickname. In the same 2021 Complex interview, he said WWE asked him to come up with a new ring name the company could own. He credited William Regal with suggesting “Daniel Brian,” which became Daniel Bryan.
That account explains why readers encounter two names for one wrestler. “Bryan Danielson” is his real name, and “The American Dragon” sits in his independent-circuit history. “Daniel Bryan” is the WWE ring name that carried him to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, as WWE’s own retrospective describes.

Where the name appears today
The nickname shows up in three different kinds of material, and each means something different:
| Use | Source and date | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Danielson’s own account of his independent career | Complex interview, 2021 | He used “The American Dragon” alongside “Bryan Danielson” on the independents. |
| WWE retrospective of his path to fame | WWE’s retrospective (undated in the sources reviewed) | WWE recounted his career using the American Dragon label before the Daniel Bryan era that led to WrestleMania 30. |
| Collectible identity | AEW 2025 card checklist, Neon Monikers subset | The checklist lists “‘The American Dragon’ Bryan Danielson” as a named identity. It shows the epithet is still treated as a collectible category, but not how the name was coined. |
| Merchandise | A 2021 report on an AEW shirt reading “The American Dragon Is Back” | The shirt existed as historical merchandise. The sources do not establish whether it is still sold. |
Taken together, these uses show the epithet was recognizable enough for promoters and merchandise makers to use it, but none of them documents its origin.

What remains unknown
- Who first called him “The American Dragon.” The sources reviewed do not name a person or a promotion.
- When the name was first used. No first-use date is established.
- Why Danielson chose it. No source quotes him explaining the choice, so any explanation about dragon symbolism or a particular influence would be speculation.
- Current availability of AEW merchandise or the 2025 cards. Stock and listings were not verified for this article.
If a source later surfaces that names the coiner or the first use, it would supersede the account above. Until then, the most accurate description is that “The American Dragon” was one of Danielson’s independent-circuit names, which he confirmed in his own words in 2021.
