Psycho is often called horror’s most important film because it changed what audiences expected from a story, turned suspense into a matter of what viewers know, and made a brief shower sequence a lasting subject of film analysis. Its importance is a critical judgment, not an objectively measurable title: horror has other landmarks and a longer history of innovation. But the case for Psycho is strong, and it rests on more than one shocking scene.
Why is Psycho so important?
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film brings together narrative rupture, carefully controlled suspense, striking audiovisual technique, psychological horror, and a release strategy built around secrecy. These choices reinforce one another: the film unsettles viewers not just through what happens, but through how it directs attention and withholds information.
1. It breaks the story’s apparent promise
The film initially invites viewers to follow Marion Crane as its central character, then kills her partway through. That abrupt change makes the story feel unstable: the character who seemed to anchor it cannot guarantee what comes next. The Library of Congress’s National Film Registry essay describes the shock of the star character’s death and the secrecy Hitchcock maintained around the plot. Library of Congress: Psycho.
2. It made secrecy part of the theatrical event
Hitchcock sought to keep the story’s surprises intact by refusing press screenings and having theaters prevent late entry. As the Library of Congress account records, those rules shaped how audiences encountered the movie: viewers were expected to arrive on time and discover the plot together, without a review or a missed opening giving away what had happened. The release strategy made surprise part of the experience, rather than merely a feature of the script. Library of Congress: Psycho.

3. It lets suspense grow from what the audience knows
After Marion’s death, the film’s center of gravity shifts. Viewers must revise their expectations and interpret the story without the character who first guided them. This is suspense built through changing knowledge: the movie controls what is revealed, when it is revealed, and how those disclosures alter the meaning of what came before. The narrative rupture is therefore not an isolated shock; it changes the audience’s relationship to the rest of the film.
What made the shower scene so shocking?
4. Editing, framing, and music make suggestion do the work
The shower sequence is famous not because it plainly displays every act of violence, but because cutting, knife imagery, shadow, sound, and the viewer’s own inference combine to create a disturbing impression. The British Film Institute highlights the editing, music, knife images, and the striking image of Marion’s eye in its discussion of the scene. The sequence is a lesson in how film form can make an audience feel an event more vividly than a continuous, explicit depiction might. BFI: Psycho (1960).

5. It rewards close attention to construction
The scene’s effect depends on a deliberately assembled sequence of images and sounds, not on a single graphic shot. The BFI reports that filming the shower sequence took a whole week. It also notes that a breath was noticed only after production, too late to reshoot. That detail points to the care involved in making the scene, while reminding viewers that a finished film can contain small imperfections even in a famously controlled passage. BFI: “10 things you (probably) never knew about the shower scene in Psycho”.
How did Psycho change the kind of horror it represented?
6. It brought fear close to ordinary life
Rather than locating terror only in a distant monster or an obviously supernatural world, Psycho makes unease emerge from familiar settings and human relationships. BFI Sight and Sound’s discussion by Linda Williams describes a critical interpretation of the film as part of a shift toward horror that is inside us and close to home. That is an interpretation of its significance, not a claim that one film single-handedly created psychological horror. BFI Sight and Sound: Linda Williams on Psycho.

7. Norman Bates makes identity part of the threat
Norman Bates is frightening because the film makes questions of identity and psychology central to its horror. AFI Movie Club identifies him as a major film villain and records his line, “A boy’s best friend is his mother.” The line belongs to Norman, the fictional character played by Anthony Perkins; it is not a statement by Hitchcock or a real-world expert. AFI Movie Club: Psycho (1960).
What did censorship and recognition reveal about its impact?
8. Its reception tested different censorship standards
In the United States, the AFI Catalog documents objections to the film’s sexual material and violence. British classification history was distinct: the BBFC records concern over the shower sequence, cuts, and an X classification for the resubmitted film. These accounts should not be collapsed into one international censorship story; they describe responses by different institutions in different jurisdictions. AFI Catalog: Psycho; BBFC: Psycho (1960).

9. Institutions have repeatedly recognized its significance
The AFI Catalog records that Psycho entered the National Film Registry in 1992. It also placed the film at number 18 in AFI’s 1997 100 Years…100 Movies list and number 14 in the 2007 anniversary edition. These dated honors document durable institutional recognition; rankings are snapshots of particular lists, not proof that all critics agree on a single greatest horror film. The catalog gives the running time as 108–109 minutes. AFI Catalog: Psycho.
10. Its scenes remain useful objects of film study
The BFI continues to examine the shower scene’s visual construction and production, showing how the sequence invites analysis of editing, framing, music, and performance. That continuing attention is one measure of the film’s legacy: its techniques are concrete enough to study closely, not simply to praise in general terms. It does not, by itself, establish that every later horror film was influenced by Psycho. BFI: Psycho (1960); BFI: “10 things you (probably) never knew about the shower scene in Psycho”.

Is Psycho the most important horror movie ever?
That depends on what “important” means. Psycho has a compelling claim when the criteria are narrative disruption, suspense shaped by audience knowledge, visual and sound technique, a turn toward psychologically grounded fear, and lasting institutional recognition. Other horror films may be stronger candidates under different measures, and the evidence here does not compare their influence in a way that could settle the question universally. Calling Psycho the most important is therefore a defensible critical position—not a measurable fact.
For readers seeking a film-history starting point, the AFI Catalog identifies Robert Bloch’s novel as the source of Hitchcock’s film. Its entry also provides production and release information alongside its account of the film’s standing. AFI Catalog: Psycho.
