Music can fill quiet moments, establish a mood and make a livestream feel more deliberate. But a track is usable only when its rights cover your broadcast—and, if you keep them, the replay and clips. “Free,” credited, purchased, or included with a personal music subscription does not automatically mean cleared for livestreaming.
Why add music to your livestream?
Used thoughtfully, background music can support a stream without competing with its main content. It can soften pauses between gameplay or conversation, reinforce a tone, and give transitions a more finished feel. For gaming creators, music may also be part of the game itself.
Those benefits are production choices, not copyright permissions. Choose music only after checking that the relevant rights cover the way you plan to use it.
Can I play music on my livestream?
Usually, only if you own the necessary rights or have permission for the specific use. YouTube says safe music is music in the public domain or music used with permission from the copyright owner. A “free” label or credit line alone does not keep a track from being flagged by Content ID. YouTube’s safe-music guidance recommends using its Audio Library and checking the terms of any third-party license.

Buying a download, owning a CD, or paying for a personal music-streaming subscription does not by itself establish permission to broadcast the recording. Turning off VODs also does not grant that permission. The precise scope depends on the license and jurisdiction.
What music can I use on Twitch or YouTube?
Start with the platform where you will broadcast, then check every other use you intend to make of the music. A license for one platform or format should not be assumed to cover another.

| Option | What to verify | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Music you composed and control | That you control the relevant composition and recording rights, including any rights held by collaborators or performers. | “My music” is not enough if other people own or control parts of it. |
| Public-domain music | That the specific work is public domain in the relevant territory and that the recording you use is also cleared. | A public-domain composition does not necessarily make a modern recording of it public domain. |
| YouTube Audio Library | Use and attribution terms shown for the selected track. | YouTube describes its Audio Library as providing copyright-safe music and sound effects. Do not assume that this automatically clears use on Twitch or other platforms. |
| YouTube Creator Music | Eligibility, region, monetization terms and the permitted video use. | YouTube points to Creator Music for monetized videos in certain regions. Do not treat that as automatic clearance for every live use or another platform. |
| Third-party music library | Written permission for each platform, live broadcasts, VODs, clips, monetization, territories, and any channel allowlisting requirement. | Availability and license scope can change. Confirm the provider’s current terms directly before using a track. |
| Game soundtrack | The game’s official EULA and any streaming or music clauses; use a music-off or streamer setting if available. | A game being licensed to play does not, by itself, establish that its music is cleared for your stream. |
YouTube says Creator Music is available in certain regions; check its current guidance for the applicable terms. For third-party libraries, evaluate the actual written license rather than relying on the words “stream-safe” or “DMCA-free.”
Will music get my stream muted or interrupted?
It can. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if the content continues. YouTube also says that even when a creator has a license, the rights owner may need to add the channel to an allowlist to prevent interruption. Arrange that step in advance when the owner or provider requires it. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains the platform’s process.

A license and an automated matching system address different parts of the problem: a license gives permission within its scope, while the platform may still detect a match. Keep the license record and follow the rights owner’s process for resolving a claim or setting up allowlisting.
Can I keep the VOD or clips?
Check this before going live. YouTube says Content ID claims can be made after a live stream ends if the creator archives the video. A license that permits live playback may not necessarily cover saved VODs or clips.

What should gaming streamers check?
Read the game’s official EULA for streaming and music terms. If it is unclear whether the soundtrack may be broadcast, turn off game music or use the game’s streamer setting when available. Twitch’s 2020 guidance specifically suggested turning off game music when unsure whether a game allows it.
Twitch’s official November 11, 2020 post, “Music-Related Copyright Claims and Twitch,” advised: “Most importantly, don’t play recorded music in your stream unless you own all rights in the music, or you have the permission of the necessary rights holder(s).” The post named Soundtrack by Twitch, Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound and NCS as rights-cleared alternatives at that time. These are historical leads, not confirmation of current availability or license scope; check present-day terms before relying on any service.

The same 2020 post reported that more than 99% of the music-related notifications Twitch analyzed for the period from late May through mid-October targeted tracks played in the background of streams, and that Twitch had received fewer than 50 music-related DMCA notifications each year before May 2020. Those figures describe the historical periods Twitch reported, not current claim rates or present-day platform risk.
A short pre-stream rights check
- Identify the source. Note each track, recording and game soundtrack you plan to include.
- Read the actual terms. Confirm permission for your platform and live use; check VODs, clips, monetization and territories if those uses matter to you.
- Confirm platform requirements. For YouTube, check whether the rights owner requires channel allowlisting, and arrange it before the stream.
- Keep proof accessible. Save license terms and records, plus any correspondence or allowlisting confirmation.
- Remove uncertain tracks. If permission or scope is unclear, leave the music out or use a source whose terms you can verify.
