The documentary stays with Russian journalists who fled after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and kept reporting from abroad. Loktev calls it “a hangout film” and “a friendly film.” The Associated Press reported that it was set to open in select theaters the weekend of October 10–11, 2026.
What is My Undesirable Friends: Part II — Exile about?
Loktev began filming independent journalists in Moscow in fall 2021, as Russian authorities were designating some reporters “foreign agents,” according to the Associated Press. Four months later, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Many of the journalists left within hours; Loktev continued filming them as they reported from exile across Europe.
TV Rain journalist Anna Nemzer was Loktev’s entry point into this group. The film also follows Peter Ruzavin, a former Russian journalist married to a Ukrainian journalist, who decided to enlist in the Ukrainian army. “We need not to run away from Putin. We need to fight him,” Ruzavin told the AP in Venice. He said he had left the work he loved and missed it every day.
Why spend nearly six hours with it?
The length gives the film room to stay with people as their lives and work change, rather than compressing their experience into a quick account of exile. Loktev described the people at its center as “very ordinary people who are just trying to do something good in an awful time.” She said a question running through the film is how people maintain enough optimism to get up the next morning and do their jobs.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loktev knows the runtime can sound daunting. “People hear, they’re like, ‘Oh my god a six-hour film about journalists? That’s really scary.’ But it’s actually not,” she told the AP. “It’s kind of a hangout film. It’s a friendly film.” The framing is an invitation to spend time with the subjects, not a claim that the film is short or light in subject matter.
Do you need to watch Part I first?
No. The AP says viewers can watch Exile without seeing Part I. The first half of Loktev’s five-year project is My Undesirable Friends: Part I — Last Air in Moscow, which runs nearly five and a half hours, according to the AP, and had been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. At the time of the AP report, Part I was streaming on MUBI; that does not establish availability for Part II.

How did Loktev film the journalists?
Loktev filmed on her iPhone. She told the AP that using it helped her nearly disappear into the background, making it possible to remain close to the people she was documenting. The AP does not identify the phone model or describe a particular lens or rig.
Born in the former Soviet Union in 1969, Loktev immigrated to the United States with her family when she was nine and continued speaking Russian with her mother, the AP reports. She left Russia after uploading her footage to the cloud.

Loktev also pushed back against the sense that audiences have moved on from authoritarianism and press freedom. “Authoritarianism isn’t tired of them,” she told the AP. She added that “everybody moves on to the next thing,” even though “the last thing hasn’t changed.” The film’s focus on journalists continuing their work in exile makes that tension personal: political events may leave the headlines, while the consequences remain part of daily life.
