Musk is a documentary, not a horror feature. The horror comparison comes from director Alex Gibney, who says the film begins as dark comedy and turns toward horror as it examines the power surrounding Elon Musk—and what that concentration of influence might mean. That is the film’s intended effect, not a settled verdict on Musk.
Why Gibney calls it a horror movie
In an October 6, 2026 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gibney described the film as “a very dark comedy that turns to a horror film at the end.” He said he wants viewers to consider how Musk might be held accountable and how people might reclaim power they have granted him.
The metaphor follows the film’s stated subject: power and its abuse. Gibney’s director’s statement for the Venice Film Festival says he approaches a familiar biography from multiple angles rather than accepting the single, all-knowing perspective Musk has built around himself. Gibney calls the film a reframing of the tech figure as a “21st century reincarnation of the confidence man.” That is the director’s thesis, not a neutral finding.
So “horror” describes a tonal and thematic turn: the unease of watching influence accumulate and considering its possible consequences. It does not mean the film is classified as a horror movie, or that its implications should be treated as proven fact.

What kind of documentary is Musk?
Venice lists Musk in its 2026 Venice Open – Out of Competition program, directed and written by Alex Gibney. The festival synopsis presents it as an incisive look behind the public legend of Elon Musk. The ticketing listing also classifies it as a documentary.
The film draws on interviews with Musk’s family, former friends and employees, journalists, and business associates, according to the Los Angeles Times. Musk did not participate. That access shapes what the film can show: it assembles accounts from people around him and other sources rather than offering his own interview in the documentary.

Disputes and allegations
The same Times report says Musk called the film a hit piece and a “psy op.” His attorney threatened to sue, alleging the film falsely implied a connection between Starlink and the 2024 election. Jigsaw Productions defended it as a fact-based examination of a public figure. These are competing positions; the reviewed reporting does not establish a court finding or resolve the underlying dispute.
On the election-related sequence, Gibney told the Times he did not believe Musk manipulated votes and said he deliberately stopped short of stating exactly what happened. The film should not be taken as proof of election interference.

Plan for roughly four hours. Listings differ on whether they include the intermission:

The difference appears to be how the intermission is counted: Venice states it separately, while Fandango gives a single runtime.

The reported North American theatrical date has varied. Fandango lists October 9, 2026; the Variety report also says Bleecker Street planned a North American theatrical release for October 9. The TheWrap, in a September 17 report, gave October 16, while the Times reported an October 9 opening in New York and Los Angeles. Check a local theater’s listing for the screening date and format; overseas dates were not set in Variety’s report.
Streaming availability was not confirmed in those reports. Variety described an HBO streaming window planned for the first quarter of 2027; TheWrap reported an HBO release sometime in 2027 and mentioned a longer version. These are future plans as reported, not confirmation of a finalized date or current availability.
