The U.S. Department of Justice says a superseding indictment unsealed on October 8, 2026, adds a charge of conspiring to commit torture against Nicolás Maduro Moros and Cilia Adela Flores de Maduro, alongside narcoterrorism, cocaine-importation conspiracy and weapons offenses. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt. For context on Venezuela, two relevant FRONTLINE documentaries are verified in official sources; those sources do not establish the four-film lineup promised by the original headline.
What was Maduro charged with this time?
In an October 8, 2026 announcement, the U.S. Department of Justice said a superseding indictment unsealed that day charges Maduro and Flores with conspiring to commit torture, as well as narcoterrorism, cocaine-importation conspiracy and weapons offenses. DOJ described the indictment as containing five counts. DOJ’s announcement
The torture-conspiracy count carries a stated maximum penalty of 20 years, according to DOJ. That is a potential statutory maximum, not a forecast of a sentence or an indication of guilt. The announcement lists separate penalty ranges for the other counts. DOJ’s charging details
Are the charges proven?
No. An indictment sets out allegations by prosecutors; it is not a judicial finding. DOJ’s 2020 charging announcement put the principle this way: “An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.” The Department’s 2026 announcement also quotes U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald calling the allegations “the epitome of corruption.” That is McDonald’s characterization, not a court’s conclusion. Which documentaries offer verified backstory?
The available official sources substantiate two relevant FRONTLINE documentaries, not the four titles in the original headline. They approach Venezuela from different angles: political crisis and relations with the United States, and investigative reporting on alleged corruption. Neither film should be treated as a substitute for following the court case or as proof of the indictment’s claims.
Crisis in Venezuela
FRONTLINE and the Associated Press describe this film as examining Venezuela’s legacy of corruption, challenges to democracy, conflict with the United States, and the contest over control of the country’s oil. Its page frames the story around the country’s uncertain future after Maduro’s capture and regime insiders remaining in power; that is the film’s framing of a contested political situation, not an uncontested verdict. The PBS announcement says the film was made by the filmmakers behind A Dangerous Assignment. PBS announcement and film page

A Dangerous Assignment: Uncovering Corruption in Maduro’s Venezuela
This 2024 FRONTLINE documentary, made with the investigative outlet Armando.info, follows journalist Roberto Deniz and reporting on alleged corruption connected to the CLAP food program, a government food-aid initiative. FRONTLINE’s account says Deniz and colleagues found that the government was purchasing low-quality products for the program. That is a description of the documentary’s reporting, not a finding in Maduro’s U.S. criminal case. FRONTLINE’s report on the documentary

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not yet a four-film guide
Official sources establish these two films as relevant viewing, but do not confirm that either belongs to the intended four-title selection. They also do not verify two additional titles. A complete four-film guide cannot responsibly be presented without confirming that lineup; adding plausible-sounding documentaries would risk misidentifying the films readers were promised.
