Saoirse Kennedy Hill was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill and Paul Michael Hill, and the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. She was 22 when she died on August 1, 2019. Her family remembered her for her love of family and friends, her interest in human rights and women’s empowerment, and her work with Indigenous communities in Mexico.
Who was Saoirse Kennedy Hill?
Kennedy Hill was a member of the Kennedy family and a communications student at Boston College. At the time of her death, she was expected to begin her senior year. Her parents were Courtney Kennedy Hill, a daughter of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, and Paul Michael Hill.
In a family statement, relatives described her as passionate about human rights and women’s empowerment and said she had worked with Indigenous communities to build schools in Mexico. The statement also recalled her affection for family and friends: “She lit up our lives with her love, her peals of laughter and her generous spirit.” Her grandmother Ethel Kennedy said, “The world is a little less beautiful today.” ABC News (Australia) reported the family statement and biographical details in August 2019.
What happened, and what was reported about her death?
Kennedy Hill was found unresponsive at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, on August 1, 2019. She was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital.

On August 2, ABC News reported that an autopsy found no trauma inconsistent with lifesaving measures and that the cause and manner of death were pending toxicology. That was the status at the time, not the final determination.
On November 1, 2019, The Boston Globe reported information from her death certificate: the manner of death was classified as accidental, and the cause was a toxic mixture of alcohol, methadone, diazepam, and fluoxetine. The certificate also listed nordiazepam and norfluoxetine, metabolites associated with some of those drugs. The Globe said it was not known whether Kennedy Hill had prescriptions for the medications.

What did she write about mental health?
In a 2016 essay for Deerfield Academy’s student newspaper, Kennedy Hill wrote about stigma surrounding depression and other mental-health conditions. She wrote, “I have experienced a lot of stigma surrounding mental health on Deerfield’s campus.” She also asked: “People talk about cancer freely; why is it so difficult to discuss the effects of depression, bi-polar, anxiety, or schizophrenic disorders?” The Boston Globe reproduced the essay excerpts in its 2019 report.
Her essay documents her own experience and views on stigma; it does not establish a cause or explanation for her death.
