Robert Kardashian Sr. was a Los Angeles attorney and businessman best known for serving on O.J. Simpson’s defense team. To his children, he was also a father who spoke often about family and Armenian heritage. His public legal role is documented in contemporaneous reporting; the personal picture comes from what his former wife and children have said about him.
Who was Robert Kardashian Sr.?
Robert George Kardashian was born in Los Angeles on February 22, 1944, and died on September 30, 2003, at age 59. He worked as an attorney and businessman and earned his law degree from the University of San Diego. The Los Angeles Times obituary and correction and The Guardian’s obituary give the biographical details.

He did not join his family’s meatpacking business. His best-known public role came through his friendship with O.J. Simpson and his work on Simpson’s defense team during the 1994 murder trial.
What did his family say about him as a father?
When Kardashian died, former wife Kris Jenner described him as a devoted parent. The Los Angeles Times quoted her saying, “I will always remember him as the world’s greatest father, whose first priority was his kids.” Jenner and Kardashian had four children: Kourtney, Kim and Khloé Kardashian, and Robert Kardashian Jr. Her statement is a personal tribute, rather than an independent account of every aspect of their relationship.

What was Robert Kardashian’s role in the O.J. Simpson case?
Kardashian served on Simpson’s defense team. The two men were friends before the 1994 case, and Kardashian’s participation made him a familiar public figure during the trial. The case is central to his public biography, but it does not by itself describe how his family remembers him.
In a 1996 interview with Barbara Walters, Kardashian reportedly said he had doubts about Simpson’s innocence. The Guardian recounts his words as “I have doubts.” That is evidence of what he said publicly in the interview; it should not be treated as proof of a private belief beyond that statement.

How should viewers understand his portrayal in television documentaries and drama?
FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story brought Kardashian’s role in the case to a later television audience. ABC News reported on the series’ creators and their portrayal of him. The program is a dramatization, not a primary source for private family conversations or exact historical dialogue. ABC News coverage of the series and its portrayal provides context for the screen depiction.
The distinction matters: obituaries document basic biographical facts and his public legal role, while family interviews and tributes reveal how relatives describe his influence. Public remarks from individual family members offer selected recollections, not a complete inventory of everything each sibling has said about their father.
