Anthony Radziwill (died August 10, 1999) was a television producer and journalist who worked at NBC Sports, ABC News and HBO. He was the son of Lee Radziwill and Prince Stanisław Albrecht Radziwill, the first cousin of John F. Kennedy Jr., and one of his closest friends. He died of cancer at 40, three weeks after JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette, were killed in a plane crash on July 16, 1999. His widow, journalist Carole Radziwill, later wrote about their marriage and that summer in the memoir What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Love.
Family and the cousin relationship
Anthony was the son of Lee Radziwill and Prince Stanisław Albrecht Radziwill. His aunt was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and because Lee and Jacqueline were sisters, Anthony was JFK Jr.’s first cousin. That family link is the one fact about the two men that is firmly documented in the contemporary obituary coverage. The Los Angeles Times, in its August 12, 1999 obituary, describes them as close friends.
Career at NBC, ABC News and HBO
Anthony’s career was in television news and documentary production. According to the Los Angeles Times obituary, he earned a broadcast journalism degree from Boston University in 1982. The timeline below draws on that obituary unless another source is named.

Investigative and Olympic work
The George Polk Award, which the Los Angeles Times links to his 1990 investigation of neo-Nazism in the United States, is the clearest mark of his reporting. The obituary also reports a later Emmy for his work on the Menendez case, but it does not give the year of that award, so no date is assigned here. Its Emmy-winning NBC Sports work on the 1988 Seoul Olympics is the earliest dated professional credit.

A 1994 interview and the O.J. Simpson case
The Los Angeles Times also reports that a federal appeals court decision on whether reporters may secretly record reluctant sources grew out of a 1994 interview Anthony conducted with an American Airlines flight attendant. The subject of that interview was O.J. Simpson’s flight on the night Nicole Brown Simpson was murdered. The obituary does not name the case, so the decision’s name and holding are not described in this article.
His marriage to Carole Radziwill
Anthony married Carole DiFalco, a fellow ABC producer, in 1994. The obituary places the wedding in August 1994 and records that John F. Kennedy Jr. was his best man. Anthony returned that role at John’s 1996 wedding to Carolyn Bessette. Carole later became a journalist and wrote about the marriage in her memoir, which is the main first-person account of their life together.

The friendship with John F. Kennedy Jr.
Carole Radziwill has described John and Anthony as close from childhood, with a bond she likened to siblings. In a 2005 CNN interview and in a 2019 Vanity Fair feature, she recalled their teasing and their deep attachment. Vanity Fair reported that Anthony gave John a place where he could feel like himself, away from public attention. These are Carole’s recollections, not documented accounts of the private relationship, and they should be read as her view of the friendship.
Anthony’s illness, in Carole Radziwill’s account
The medical details of Anthony’s illness come from Carole Radziwill, not from a medical record. In a 2005 CNN Larry King Live interview, she said he was diagnosed with fibrosarcoma shortly before they became engaged. She said the tumor first appeared in the right rectus muscle of the abdominal wall, later spread to his lungs, and that he was 35 when diagnosed. No independent clinical record, oncology source, or treatment account has been located for these specifics, so they should be attributed to her.

The summer of 1999
ABC News, in its October 3, 2005 memoir excerpt, reports that John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999, and that Anthony died three weeks later. The Los Angeles Times obituary dates his death to August 10, 1999. The two events are presented in sequence in these sources, and neither source attributes Anthony’s death to the crash.

Kennedy, in a statement quoted by the Los Angeles Times in 1999, said: “Anthony was immensely talented, but he was also an immensely engaging and decent human being.” In the same statement he added: “His loss so soon after the death of his close friend and cousin, John Kennedy, is very hard for our whole family. But Anthony lived a happy life of high achievement and great courage, and that is how we will always remember him.”

ABC colleague Diane Sawyer, quoted by the same obituary, said: “He was both fearless and humane in his reporting. He thought nothing of going into the streets, knocking on doors or talking to strangers to get the story.”
Carole Radziwill, in the 2005 Larry King Live interview, said: “We didn’t go into this marriage thinking it was the end. We thought of it as a beginning.” These words are hers, about the marriage, and are not Anthony’s own.

What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Love is written by Carole Radziwill, not by Anthony, and it is not an independent biography of him. It is the natural next read for anyone who wants her perspective on the marriage, his illness and the summer of 1999.
