Valya Harkonnen is the Mother Superior and leader of the Sisterhood in HBO’s Dune: Prophecy. Emily Watson plays her as an adult, while Jessica Barden portrays her in the younger timeline. Valya is Tula Harkonnen’s older sister and a determined strategist in the Sisterhood’s evolution into the Bene Gesserit.
What is Valya’s role in the series?
Valya leads the Sisterhood, an order whose members work to shape humanity’s future. The series follows the Harkonnen sisters as they confront threats to humanity and establish the sect that becomes the Bene Gesserit. The Sisterhood and the Bene Gesserit are not simply interchangeable names: the show is set during an earlier period in the order’s development.
Dune: Prophecy takes place about 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise. Its premise and period place Valya’s choices far ahead of the events depicted in the main Dune story. (Warner Bros. Discovery’s series description)
Who plays Valya, and how is she related to Tula?
Emily Watson plays adult Valya, and Jessica Barden plays the character when she is younger. Tula, played by Olivia Williams as an adult, is Valya’s younger sister. Warner Bros. Discovery’s character description says Tula has lived in her older sister’s shadow, a detail that underscores the sisters’ unequal positions and complicated bond.

What kind of leader is Valya?
Valya is strategic and willing to manipulate people to achieve what she considers a larger purpose. Watson described her in a Television Academy interview as someone who knows what she wants and works out how to influence others to get it. Watson also called her complex, morally ambiguous and powerful.
Watson connects Valya’s drive to her upbringing and formative experiences. In the actor’s interpretation, being told as a young woman that she was special, talented and chosen was a dangerous influence. In a separate interview, Watson described Valya’s heart as having frozen after those experiences and said rage and vengeance fuel her. These are Watson’s readings of the role, not a neutral diagnosis of the character. (Television Academy interview with Emily Watson, November 20, 2024; Bell Media interview)

How does the show relate to the books?
The series is inspired by Sisterhood of Dune, the novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Showrunner Alison Schapker has said the television story draws on characters and scenarios from the books but also adapts and extrapolates from them. That means the show should not be treated as a scene-by-scene account of the novel or as evidence that every television plot point appears there. (Warner Bros. Discovery’s series description; Los Angeles Times interview with Alison Schapker, December 22, 2024)

Spoilers for the Season 1 finale: Valya’s rise to leadership involved killing members of the Sisterhood aligned with Dorotea. Schapker has said Valya did not act for pleasure: she felt cornered and believed she was protecting the order’s future. By the end of the season, Valya is on Arrakis, pursuing the mystery behind Desmond Hart’s powers. (Los Angeles Times interview with Alison Schapker, December 22, 2024)
