Stephen Nedoroscik is an American artistic gymnast from Worcester, Massachusetts, and a pommel horse specialist. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, he won bronze in the men’s team event and a separate bronze in the individual pommel horse final. He was already a world champion on the apparatus in 2021, years before the Olympic attention made him known to a wider audience.
Who is Stephen Nedoroscik?
Nedoroscik grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, and attended Penn State, graduating in 2020 with a degree in electrical engineering. USA Gymnastics says he began gymnastics in 2003; the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) biography says he took up the sport at age four. He named pommel horse as his favorite event on his USA Gymnastics profile.
In the FIG biography, Nedoroscik recalled having unusually strong grip as a child and being in an environment that helped him become a gymnast. His strength and specialization developed into a career centered on an apparatus where control, precision and uninterrupted rhythm matter.
Why is he called the “Pommel Horse Guy”?
“Pommel Horse Guy” is a nickname used in Associated Press coverage of Nedoroscik. It points to his role at the Paris Olympics: he was a specialist brought into the U.S. men’s team lineup for pommel horse, then drew attention with a successful routine under the pressure of the team final. His emergence was not the start of his gymnastics career; he had won major titles well before Paris.

His glasses and the contrast between an understated appearance and a high-stakes performance also became part of the online reaction. WBUR’s coverage referenced the “Clark Kent” nickname. These are media and audience framings, rather than formal titles or measures of his popularity.
What did Stephen Nedoroscik achieve at the Paris 2024 Olympics?
He earned two distinct bronze medals: one as part of the U.S. men’s team and one in the individual pommel horse final. The team medal recognized the combined result of the U.S. lineup across events; the individual medal came from Nedoroscik’s own pommel horse final. FIG records his individual final score as 15.300.

In a WBUR interview after the Games, Nedoroscik described the individual final as a chance to enjoy the moment after helping the team earn a medal. He also spoke about the disappointment of being left off the 2021 Olympic team and continuing to work toward doing better.
What had he won before the Olympics?
World champion in 2021
Nedoroscik won the 2021 world championship on pommel horse, becoming the first gymnast representing the United States to win a world championship gold medal on that apparatus. FIG records his final score as 15.266.

U.S. titles and later championships
USA Gymnastics lists four U.S. pommel horse titles for Nedoroscik, tied for the most in U.S. history according to his athlete profile. The same profile records fifth place on pommel horse at the 2025 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships in New Orleans and fifth at the 2026 Championships in Phoenix. These later results show that his competitive record continued after Paris.
How did he respond to the sudden attention?
After the men’s team final, Nedoroscik told Vogue that, when he got his phone back and saw the messages, he wondered, “What the heck is going on?” He also described hearing from people who had become fans of men’s gymnastics after watching him and the U.S. team.

In a 2025 Associated Press profile, he said fame could make him anxious and that he did not particularly want to be famous. He framed gymnastics as the reason for the attention: “At the end of the day, I am a gymnast and I blew up for being a gymnast.” The profile reported that he had returned to training and was looking toward the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. That was an ambition he expressed in 2025, not confirmation that he will qualify for or compete at the Games.

Pommel horse is one of men’s artistic gymnastics’ apparatus events. Gymnasts support themselves on their hands and perform continuous swings and circles around and over the horse, using its handles as part of the routine. A clean performance depends on maintaining control and flow without pauses, loss of balance or a fall.

At the Olympics, a gymnast’s individual pommel horse result is separate from the team competition, where each country’s score is built from its gymnasts’ performances across apparatus events. Nedoroscik’s Paris team bronze and individual pommel horse bronze therefore represent two different achievements.
