Spoilers for Season 4, including episode 8, “Lifeboat.” Milton Dudenoff is a retired film professor who taught the Brothers Sisters and the Westies, a group of residents in the Arconia’s West Tower. He was also their friend and benefactor. Dudenoff chose to end his life after learning he was terminally ill; the Westies helped conceal his death, but they did not kill him.
Who was Milton Dudenoff?
Dudenoff was a retired film professor and neighbor whose apartment was across from Charles’s. He mentored the Brothers Sisters, and the Westies had taken his class too. His place in both groups links the season’s separate clues: the filmmakers’ effort to reconnect with a former teacher and the Westies’ apparent knowledge of a supposedly absent neighbor.
In the early account, Dudenoff is said to be in Portugal, making him seem distant and difficult to contact. The Portugal story later proves to be a cover, not an explanation of where he was living.
The A.V. Club’s recap of Season 4, episode 3 describes the early setup around Dudenoff’s apartment and the claim that its owner was in Portugal.

What does Season 4 reveal about him?
Episode 6 connects him to the Brothers Sisters and the Westies
In episode 6, the Brothers Sisters identify Dudenoff as their film professor and mentor. They say they had lost touch with him, and that making a film about the podcast was partly a way to get close to him again. The episode also establishes that the Westies had taken his class.
TheWrap’s interview about episode 6 discusses the documentary-style challenge of filming it and the episode’s connections between Dudenoff and the two groups.

Episode 8 explains his death and the Portugal cover story
In “Lifeboat,” the season reveals that Dudenoff had learned he had only months to live. He gathered the Westies, took a lethal dose of pills, and asked them to put his body in the incinerator, keep cashing his Social Security checks, and tell people he had moved to Portugal. The Westies concealed his death and carried out his request; they were not his killers.
Dudenoff had deliberately left Helga out of the gathering. In a recorded explanation for her, he said he wanted to spare her another death after she had already lost her father.

Dudenoff’s support gave the Westies room to pursue their ambitions without worrying about rent. Showrunner and co-creator John Hoffman describes the group as “found family” and says they knew Dudenoff well enough to carry out a difficult final request. That is Hoffman’s interpretation of the story’s emotional center; the plot itself establishes the practical help Dudenoff gave them and the promise they kept.

The distinction matters: the Westies’ concealment makes them look suspicious during the investigation, but the reveal reframes their actions as loyalty to a friend—not murder.
