TikTok grew out of two founding stories. Zhang Yiming and a team including Rubo Liang founded ByteDance, the company that created TikTok. Separately, Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang founded Musical.ly, a short-video app ByteDance acquired and combined with TikTok in 2018. So TikTok was not simply invented by one person: its global form joined ByteDance’s product and recommendation expertise with Musical.ly’s team, users, and community.
ByteDance’s founders: Zhang Yiming and Rubo Liang
TikTok’s corporate roots begin with ByteDance, founded in 2012 by a team led by Zhang Yiming and Rubo Liang. Zhang became the company’s best-known founder, but ByteDance’s own account describes a founding team rather than a one-person venture. Liang, also written Liang Rubo, was a co-founder and longtime collaborator of Zhang’s.
ByteDance’s first major breakout product was Toutiao, a news and information platform that personalized what users saw. The company’s early business was not built around dance videos; it developed a recommendation-driven approach to distributing content and later applied that experience to other products. That distinction matters: Zhang founded TikTok’s parent company, but there is no basis for saying he personally invented every feature or wrote TikTok’s software. From Toutiao to Douyin and TikTok
ByteDance entered short-form video with Douyin, launched in China in September 2016. In 2017, it launched TikTok as its international short-video product outside mainland China. Douyin and TikTok share a corporate lineage and broad product concept, but they are distinct services for different markets—not simply one app with two names.

The timeline helps separate the products:
- 2012: ByteDance is founded; Toutiao becomes its early breakout product.
- 2014: Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang launch Musical.ly.
- September 2016: ByteDance launches Douyin in China.
- 2017: ByteDance launches TikTok internationally and acquires Musical.ly in November.
- August 2018: Musical.ly and TikTok are combined under the TikTok name.

Musical.ly’s founders: Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang
The other half of TikTok’s origin story is Musical.ly, founded by Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang in 2014. The founders initially pursued an education-oriented app concept, then shifted toward short videos built around music and lip-syncing. Musical.ly developed a sizable youth following, especially in the United States and other international markets.

Zhu is often mistakenly described as a TikTok founder. More precisely, he co-founded Musical.ly, then became a senior executive in TikTok after ByteDance acquired the company. Yang was Musical.ly’s other co-founder and is too often omitted from simplified accounts. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in November 2017. The purchase price was reported as close to $1 billion; it is safer to describe that as a reported figure rather than a formally disclosed price. In August 2018, ByteDance combined Musical.ly with TikTok and kept the TikTok name.

In its August 1, 2018 announcement, TikTok said Musical.ly accounts, content, and fan communities would move into an upgraded TikTok app. The result was more than a name change: TikTok gained an established international audience and community, while ByteDance’s existing international product and recommendation-driven approach became the platform’s foundation. The announcement identifies Zhu as a Musical.ly co-founder, not as the sole creator of TikTok.

TikTok’s growth is better understood as the interaction of several factors than as one founder’s stroke of genius. ByteDance brought experience with personalized content recommendations, developed through products such as Toutiao and Douyin. Musical.ly brought users and a participatory format centered on music, short clips, and remixing. TikTok’s tools made it easy to record, edit, and reuse sounds, while its For You feed gave people a way to discover videos beyond accounts they already followed.

The 2018 migration connected these strengths at scale. The Congressional Research Service points to the Musical.ly acquisition and TikTok’s recommendation algorithm as important elements in the app’s U.S. growth. These were company and team achievements: founders helped establish direction, but engineers, product teams, creators, and the communities using the apps all shaped the service that emerged.
Where the founders fit today
Zhang Yiming stepped down as ByteDance CEO in 2021. Rubo Liang, his co-founder and longtime collaborator, succeeded him as CEO. Their leadership history reinforces why describing ByteDance as a single-founder company is incomplete.
Alex Zhu joined ByteDance after the acquisition and held a senior role at TikTok. Luyu Yang’s established connection to the story is as Musical.ly co-founder; claims about her later responsibilities or current activities should not be inferred without reliable evidence. TikTok’s later CEOs and executives—including Shou Zi Chew and former executive Kevin Mayer—were not founders.
The precise answer
If someone asks who founded TikTok, the most accurate short answer is: ByteDance, founded by Zhang Yiming and a team including Rubo Liang, created TikTok; Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang founded Musical.ly, whose product and audience were brought into TikTok when ByteDance combined the services in August 2018. Zhang is a founder of TikTok’s parent company, while Zhu and Yang founded its key predecessor. Those are connected roles, but they are not interchangeable.
