Spoilers for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Confirmed deaths covered here include Genryusai Yamamoto, Chojiro Sasakibe, and Retsu Unohana; the official story summary also describes Tenjiro Kirinji, Kirio Hikifune, and Oh-Etsu Nimaiya sacrificing their lives. Masaki Kurosaki’s death is a backstory event revealed in the arc, not a death during the present war. This is a verified selection, not a complete census: official summaries do not enumerate every casualty. The anime’s final part, The Calamity, began July 25, 2026, so anime coverage remains time-sensitive.
Confirmed deaths and sacrifices
The entries below are supported by official character profiles or the official anime story summary. “Sacrifice” is kept distinct from being killed by an opponent, and Masaki is marked as a historical death.
| Character | Medium and timing | Status | Cause or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genryusai Yamamoto | TYBW; present war | Confirmed dead | The official profile says Yhwach trapped him and took his Bankai. It adds: “Even in death, he grabbed onto his enemy and would not let go as he tried to protect the Soul Society.” Official character profiles |
| Chojiro Tadaoki Sasakibe | TYBW; present war | Confirmed dead | His official profile says he “gave his life fighting the Stern Ritters.” Official character profiles |
| Retsu Unohana | TYBW; present war | Confirmed dead | Her official profile says she died after her battle with Zaraki, satisfied that her mission was complete. Official character profiles |
| Tenjiro Kirinji, Kirio Hikifune, and Oh-Etsu Nimaiya | TYBW; present war | Official summary describes a sacrifice | The official story summary says they “sacrifice their lives to break their blood oath seal” so Senjumaru Shutara can use her Bankai. The summary establishes the sacrifice in that scene; it does not supply further detail about what follows. Official story summaries |
| Masaki Kurosaki | Backstory contextualized in TYBW | Confirmed historical death | She died protecting her nine-year-old son from Grand Fisher. Her profile explains that she had lost her Quincy powers after Yhwach’s Auswählen; this is not a death during the present war. Official character profiles |
Who is defeated but not confirmed dead?
Being beaten or badly injured does not, by itself, establish a death. The official summary for the Sternritter Masculine says he defeated Shuhei Hisagi, Ikkaku Madarame, and Yumichika Ayasegawa, then describes Hisagi waking up. It does not say those three died. Official story summaries
For a reliable status check, look for explicit confirmation of death or a clear account of a character giving their life. Do not infer death from a defeat, a severe wound, or a character’s absence from a later scene.

How complete is this list?
It is not exhaustive. The official summaries reviewed confirm these named examples but do not provide a complete death census, and they also describe broad casualties without naming every victim. No authoritative named-character death total is established by those sources, so a single figure would risk mixing confirmed deaths with sacrifices, unnamed casualties, backstory events, and mere defeats.
Keep manga events separate from what the anime has adapted. VIZ lists the anime’s final part, The Calamity, as beginning July 25, 2026; the events still to be covered in that part are not settled by the summaries cited here. VIZ’s listing names Hulu and Disney+ for the US-facing listing and describes its territories as “Global Ex Asia”; availability and schedules can vary by location. VIZ’s listing for The Calamity
