They have made films together since childhood, studied at Chapman University and worked through years of smaller projects before their supernatural series became a hit. Their public story is clearest on their upbringing and creative partnership; reliable sources offer much less detail about their private relationships.
Who are Matt and Ross Duffer?
Matt and Ross Duffer are American writers, directors and producers who work as a filmmaking team. They were born in Durham, North Carolina, in 1984, according to PBS NC’s 2023 profile. Their shared professional identity grew out of a childhood interest in making movies, and they are now most closely associated with Stranger Things, which Netflix credits as created by the brothers.
For documentary viewers, their career is a story of sustained collaboration: early home movies, film-school ambitions, modest first projects and, eventually, an internationally prominent television series.
Where did the Duffer Brothers grow up?
The twins grew up in Durham. PBS NC reports that their parents gave them a Hi8 camera by third grade after the boys had talked about making films. TIME also recalls their Durham upbringing and their habit of seeking out movies at a local video store. Those early influences offered both the equipment and the shared pastime that would shape their work.

They attended Jordan High School before moving to California for film school. In a 2017 interview with TheWrap, the brothers said they had wanted to attend film school from around fourth or fifth grade. They did not get into USC or NYU, and ultimately attended Chapman University. Ross described how naturally they worked as a pair, saying they did not function as well apart when making things.
How did they get started in filmmaking?
Their first work was made together while they were still children. Matt told TheWrap that they began making movies as a team in third grade and did not know how to work alone. At Chapman, they came to see that short films alone rarely drew industry attention, so writing offered a more practical route into professional work.

Their first years in the business were gradual rather than an immediate leap to television success. PBS NC says they spent eight years in the industry doing odd jobs before their first feature film, which went straight to video. That early period helped them build experience as writers and directors before their best-known project found a home.
What did they work on before Stranger Things?
Before their breakthrough, the brothers directed the horror feature Hidden and wrote for M. Night Shyamalan’s television series Wayward Pines, according to TIME and TheWrap. These credits show the mix of film direction and television writing that preceded their defining collaboration with Netflix.

Those projects did not make them household names, but they were part of a long path from film-school ambitions to sustained work in the industry. Their early career is important context for understanding why the eventual success of Stranger Things was a turning point rather than a first attempt.
How did Stranger Things become their breakthrough?
The idea began as a supernatural story about a missing child, his friends and his family. The brothers initially imagined it as a “long-form movie,” and Matt described the pitch as, “What would a Stephen King book look like if it were directed by Steven Spielberg,” in a 2023 Guardian interview.

Getting the series made took persistence. PBS NC reports that more than 15 major Hollywood networks rejected the idea before Netflix accepted it. The series became the project most closely identified with the brothers. TIME reported that its first season received 18 Emmy nominations in 2017; that figure refers to the first season as reported at the time, not the show’s lifetime total.
PBS NC’s 2023 profile also reported that the brothers signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix in 2019. That describes a business agreement, not their personal wealth. In the same profile, PBS said the series had viewers in more than 190 countries; that is the reach figure stated in that 2023 account, not a current audience count.

What is their creative partnership like?
The Duffer Brothers have worked together since childhood and describe filmmaking as a joint effort. Their closeness is both a practical working arrangement and a source of candid feedback. In a profile for Mr Porter, Ross described the value of that frankness: “Who better than your twin to say, ‘Hey dude, you’re acting like a douchebag’”.
That partnership is a more firmly documented part of their personal story than details about romantic relationships or family arrangements. The interviews and profiles cited here focus primarily on their shared work, upbringing and careers; they do not establish current private relationship status.
What have the brothers said about the final season?
Netflix’s Tudum interview about the final season quotes Ross describing it as the biggest season in terms of action, visual effects and story, while stressing that viewers want to see the characters together one last time. This is Ross’s description of the season, not an independent assessment of its scale or reception.
The available career accounts here establish Stranger Things as their signature series, but do not provide a complete, verified account of every project or production arrangement after it. Their best-documented trajectory remains the one from childhood filmmaking in Durham to building a major television series together.
