For one already-encoded 720p stream, a Linux VPS with 1–2 vCPUs and 1–2 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point—but in India, choose primarily by the outbound data allowance in the exact region. A steady 3 Mbps stream uses about 972 GB in a 30-day month before overhead; 4 Mbps uses about 1.30 TB. Amazon Lightsail’s 2 GB Linux bundle lists 3 TB of standard transfer, but Mumbai receives half that allowance, or 1.5 TB. That may suit one modest-bitrate stream, with limited headroom at 4 Mbps. This is a planning estimate, not a tested guarantee of continuous operation.
Start with the stream’s bitrate and workload
A VPS that only sends an already-encoded video to YouTube has a different job from one that also encodes or transcodes it. For relaying a single stream, transfer allowance is often the decisive constraint; for encoding, CPU capacity and the video workload matter much more. Resolution alone does not determine monthly data use: bitrate does.
- Relay an encoded file or feed: 1–2 vCPUs and 1–2 GB RAM can be a sensible initial tier to evaluate for one stream, but no cited independent benchmark establishes a universal minimum.
- Encode or transcode on the VPS: do not assume that tier is sufficient. Test the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and representative footage on the chosen instance.
- Run more than one stream: recalculate total outbound transfer and assess CPU, memory, and recovery needs for the combined workload.
Estimate the monthly transfer allowance
For a constant-bitrate stream, estimate decimal gigabytes over 30 days as: bitrate in Mbps × 86,400 seconds × 30 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. This works out to about 324 GB per Mbps per 30-day month, before transport overhead. It is arithmetic based on bitrate and time, not a provider benchmark.
| Stream bitrate | Estimated transfer per 30-day month |
|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | About 972 GB |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,296 GB |
| 6 Mbps | About 1,944 GB |
| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB |
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The bitrate used changes the transfer requirement: for example, the 12 Mbps recommendation for 1080p60 implies roughly 3,888 GB over 30 days before overhead. YouTube lists AV1 and H.265 ranges separately, so use the recommendation for the actual codec rather than mixing values across codec columns. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Compare India-region VPS allowances, not headline prices alone
Provider plan figures are volatile. Check the selected plan’s current price, included outbound transfer, billing units, and any regional adjustments before purchase. Include possible excess-transfer charges in the monthly cost.
| Provider and region | Published plan or allowance | What it means for a 24/7 stream |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Lightsail, Mumbai | The Linux bundle table lists $5/month for 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB standard transfer; the $12/month bundle lists 2 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 60 GB SSD, and 3 TB standard transfer. AWS says Mumbai bundles receive half the listed standard transfer allowance: 0.5 TB and 1.5 TB respectively. Current pricing page accessed 2026. | The 0.5 TB allowance is below the 972 GB estimate for 3 Mbps. The 2 GB bundle’s 1.5 TB allowance can cover the 3 Mbps illustration and may cover 4 Mbps, but leaves limited headroom before overhead. |
| DigitalOcean, Bangalore location available | Droplet transfer starts from 500 GiB/month; excess outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB, and a team’s transfer pool is shared among its Droplets. Excess-transfer pricing verified 25 August 2026. | 500 GiB is insufficient even for the 3 Mbps illustration. Check the exact plan’s allowance and calculate whether any excess charge makes the full monthly cost acceptable. |

These are not equivalent regional configurations. DigitalOcean lists Bangalore as a datacenter location, but the allowance depends on the selected Droplet plan. Lightsail documents a Mumbai adjustment that halves the standard transfer allowance. Compare the actual region-specific quota and the potential overage bill, not just base plan prices.
Configure and operate the stream for recovery
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over SSL. Its ingestion documentation specifies port 443 and a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint. Follow the endpoint and stream-key details shown in YouTube’s live setup; do not assume a generic server address will work. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

- Choose the output settings. Match the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR mode, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s recommendations for that codec and format. Confirm the VPS has enough monthly transfer at the selected bitrate.
- Set up secure ingestion. Use YouTube’s valid ingestion endpoint and RTMPS over port 443 where supported. Treat the stream key as a credential; do not expose it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or public repositories.
- Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio. A static test image can hide problems that appear in footage with motion or sound.
- Monitor stream health. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test and after launch. Monitoring helps identify ingestion or network problems; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Plan for interruption. Configure the playback or streaming process to reconnect or restart after failure, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream status. Leave transfer headroom for overhead and account for any other traffic on the VPS.
Know the limits of a VPS sizing estimate
A 1–2 vCPU, 1–2 GB instance is a reasoned starting point for transmitting one already-encoded stream, not a proven minimum for every setup or a promise of 24/7 uptime. The cited provider and YouTube documentation does not establish that a particular VPS size will stay online continuously. Instance performance, network interruptions, software configuration, encoding workload, and recovery design all affect results. If the VPS encodes or transcodes, run a representative test rather than relying on the relay-oriented estimate.

Check rights and YouTube policy before looping
A technical setup does not give you rights to the video or music you stream. Use content you own or are licensed to use, and review the applicable YouTube rules before running a continuous loop. Repeated playback can also raise separate questions about channel eligibility and monetization; do not assume that a technically successful stream automatically qualifies. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help you review rights considerations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 1 GB VPS handle a 24/7 stream?
It depends on the region’s transfer allowance and the stream bitrate; memory alone cannot answer that. Compare the plan’s actual included outbound data with the 30-day estimate for your bitrate.
How can I estimate transfer for a bitrate not listed here?
Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by about 324 to estimate decimal GB for 30 days, before overhead.
