For a continuous playlist, the simplest Google Cloud setup is a Compute Engine virtual machine running FFmpeg: make the media files available to the VM, loop a compatible input, and send the encoded output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate, more managed option for workflows that need cloud transcoding or HLS/DASH outputs; it is not required for a basic FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream.
Choose the Google Cloud architecture

The API’s managed input and output workflow is materially different from pointing an encoder at YouTube. Google documents remote distribution over RTMP or SRT, but destination compatibility and configuration still matter. See the Live Stream API overview and remote distribution guide.
Prepare YouTube Live and your playlist
Activate live streaming and get the ingest credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. You will enter them in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in public scripts, logs, or source control.
- If this is the first time enabling live streaming on the channel, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as YouTube Help’s encoder guide states.
Make playlist media compatible
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer works with compatible streams; it is not a universal playlist mechanism for arbitrary files. Items with different codecs, stream layouts, or other relevant properties may need to be normalized or transcoded first. Test transitions for both sound and picture before relying on the playlist. FFmpeg explains the distinction between concatenation methods in its media concatenation FAQ.
Keep files on the VM or make them reliably accessible to the FFmpeg process. Ensure the playlist and all referenced media remain available for the whole broadcast.

Run FFmpeg on a Google Cloud VM and publish directly
The exact command depends on your media, playlist construction, encoding choices, and YouTube’s current ingest settings. The command below shows the shape of an RTMP output, not a turnkey deployment recipe:

For one input, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely; FFmpeg documents this option in its main options reference. A multi-item playlist needs a compatible concat arrangement or another input method, then a loop of the resulting input as appropriate. Replace the illustrative placeholders with the server URL and key from YouTube and the correct input and encoding options for your files. Google’s FFmpeg example concerns the Live Stream API, not a YouTube-specific command; YouTube’s own guide documents entering its server URL and key in encoder settings.
Keep the process running and verify the feed
- Use a service manager or supervisor to start FFmpeg and configure restart behavior appropriate to your uptime needs. Add monitoring so a stopped or unhealthy process is noticed.
- Check the VM’s actual encoding load with the chosen files and settings. The required machine size depends on whether you are copying compatible streams or transcoding, as well as resolution and frame rate.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview before depending on the broadcast. Check audio and video continuity, and inspect every playlist transition.
These are deployment and operational recommendations; the cited documentation does not provide a tested Compute Engine deployment recipe or guarantee a particular restart setup.

When the Live Stream API makes sense
- Configure a Live Stream API input and send it an encoder feed using RTMP or SRT. Google describes FFmpeg as one possible encoder in its Before you begin guide.
- Configure a channel to transcode the input into the HLS or DASH outputs your workflow needs. Google also documents primary and backup inputs, live-to-VOD, and channel events in the API overview.
- If the destination is YouTube, configure remote distribution to its endpoint and confirm the destination accepts the chosen protocol and output. Google documents RTMP and SRT distribution in its remote endpoint guide.
This path adds a managed ingest-and-transcode architecture; it is not a prerequisite for sending FFmpeg output directly to YouTube.
Plan around playlist, archive, and cost constraints
- Archive duration: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish an archive guarantee for a single stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, plan shorter segments or an independent recording.
- Playlist differences: Validate stream compatibility and transitions before launch; normalize or transcode files that do not work together with your chosen concat approach.
- VM sizing and cost: There is no universal machine size or monthly cost for this workload. It varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, transcoding, region, runtime, and network use. Benchmark the actual workload and check current Google Cloud pricing before budgeting.
- Encoding settings: Choose settings for your source media and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. No specific bitrate, resolution, or frame-rate recommendation is established here for every playlist and VM combination.
Troubleshoot common failures
